ACORN staff in Bristol need a new office - we need help!

We'd love to be in a community space and not somewhere clinical/corporate but open to anything that fits:

- At least three rooms
- Daytime, evening and weekend access
- Kitchenette/break area, shared or private

Ideally it would be in a community with members living locally, and have a space we can use for members' meetings on site, but we're open to a variety of options!

Please comment or email [email protected] if you have any leads ✊

The Truth About Bailiffs: Day 1

Our campaign to end the use of bailiffs for council tax debt recovery is based on evidence. This month, we’ll be sharing the truth about bailiffs - facts and stats that demonstrate why bailiff use must end.

Today’s fact: When bailiffs visit they don’t only expect people to pay everything upfront, they also throw in hundreds of pounds in fees for their own profit. This pushes people who are already struggling with debt further into financial hardship, making it harder for them to get back on track with bills.

Who stands to benefit from this? Bailiff companies who know this will ensure they keep getting business!

We’re still waiting for decisive action from Bristol City Council. You can write to your local councillor here: https://acornuk.good.do/southwest/councillor_bristol_bailiffs

ACORN member Wesley and his family have been found ‘intentionally homeless’ by South Gloucestershire Council after being forced to leave their home because it was unfit to live in.

The family acted to protect their children, and as a result the council are trying to waive their responsibilities.

We showed up on Wednesday to show South Glos Council that they can’t treat their tenants like this. Everyone deserves safe accommodation.

We demand that SGC: immediately overturn the intentional homelessness decision,
accept responsibility of the full housing duty owed to the family, and urgently provide secure accommodation.

Today the Renter’s Rights Act comes into effect! This marks an end to no fault evictions, something ACORN has fought hard for.

Local ACORN member and music teacher Gabe spoke to us about the impact of being served a no fault eviction, fighting to stay in his home, and the solidarity he found at ACORN.

This is why the work we do is so important. Because tenants are people, not profit.

The fight isn’t over yet.

Bristol ACORN chair Fadumo talking about the Renter’s Rights Act with Alice from the We_Rent Campaign.

We’re proud to be included as a local resource in the Renter’s Rights Toolkit for Bristolians.

We’re even more proud to have fought hard as a union to take back power for renters.

If you want to learn more about how your rights are changing, find the toolkit here: https://we-rent.org.uk/
