The Harbour

The Harbour The Harbour is a Bristol based charity providing professional counselling and support to people impacted by illnesses, death, dying or bereavement.

Established In 1992 by psychotherapist Jill Brown, The Harbour provides free, professional counselling and psychotherapy to people facing emotional and psychological crisis as a result of physical life-threatening illness. Clients include those suffering from life-threatening illness, loved ones, carers and those who have been bereaved due to illness. Whether it is you who are affected by a life-t

hreatening illness or a friend or partner is, we will find the best option to suit you and your needs. Regular counselling is a time and space where clients can explore how they feel about what is happening, and also consider the impact that past life experiences are having now. It is a time when you can speak about all things that are difficult to share with people close to you, and begin to make sense of your experiences.

‘My sessions at The Harbour helped me to untangle my life and to realise the many buried issues I had to deal with. They also gave me the confidence to hold my head up, instead of walking around with it down. I cannot thank The Harbour enough.’ – Former client. Set in a convenient and comfortable townhouse in Bristol, our services are unique, accessible and confidential, delivered by a qualified, experienced and down to earth team that adhere to the BACP Code of Ethics and Practise. The support offered by The Harbour can be a lifeline for many people that otherwise may be feeling isolated, worried, in fear and/or at a loss in the face of life-threatening illness. It can help them to find the strength to manage their lives.

‘Suddenly I realised how much the medical approach had dehumanised us. Most professionals at this stage saw him simply as a cancer sufferer and me as a machine for keeping him fed, clean and medicated. It felt amazing to be reminded that he and I were both full human beings, dealing with complex and agonising emotions around the simple medical facts of his diagnosis and prognosis’ – Former client

💙 A huge thank you to our amazing trustee, Alice, who completed the London Marathon yesterday! 🏃‍♀️🎉

We are so proud of Alice for taking on such an incredible challenge and crossing the finish line; what an achievement! 👏

Her marathon run has already raised over £500 for The Harbour, helping us continue to support those in our community when they need us most.

Thank you, Alice, for your dedication and for going the extra mile (literally!) 💙

💙 An Update from The Harbour 💙

Like many small charities, our priority is always to support the people who need us most. But with funding becoming harder to secure, this is getting increasingly challenging.

At the start of 2026, we had to make the very difficult decision to pause new referrals for three months. This helped us manage our waiting list safely and continue providing the level of care our clients deserve.

We reopened to new referrals yesterday evening, and by this morning, our waiting list had already reached 50% capacity.
It’s a clear reminder of just how many people are reaching out for support right now, and how tough things are across the mental health sector.

We want to say a huge thank you to our funders, partners and supporters 💛 Your kindness and commitment make our work possible; we truly couldn’t do this without you.

🌟 We’re excited to share some wonderful news! 🌟

The Rolls‑Royce Defence Apprentice Association has chosen The Harbour as one of their two charity partners for the year, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

We’re truly honoured to have been selected. Over the coming year, we’ll be working together to help raise vital funds so that more people in Bristol can access the compassionate, specialist support they need during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

A huge thank you to everyone at the Rolls‑Royce Defence Apprentice Association for putting their support behind our work.

✨ A huge thank you to everyone who came and danced the night away at our Spring Ceilidh on Saturday with the amazing All At Sea Ceilidh Collective!

We’re thrilled to share that the event sold out, and together we raised over £2,000 in support of our vital counselling service. Your energy, generosity, and joyful spirit made the night truly special💛

This amazing fundraising total wouldn’t have been possible without the extremely generous contributions from Bristol favourites Left Handed Giant Brewing Co. and Arbor Ales – thank you so much for your wholehearted support. 💙

💙A huge 'thank you' to The Hospital Saturday Fund for awarding us a grant towards the costs of providing our vital counselling service. It is thanks to funders such as this that we are able to support adults in Bristol experiencing grief and loss. 💙

🌍 World Cancer Day | 4 February

Today, on World Cancer Day, we join organisations and communities across the globe in recognising the profound impact that cancer has on individuals, families, and support networks.

At The Harbour we work with people navigating the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis. We understand that these experiences can bring uncertainty, fear, and complex emotions that are often difficult to talk about.

Our counselling services provide a confidential, specialist space where people can explore what they are facing; whether they are living with illness themselves, caring for someone close to them, or coping with grief.

As demand for emotional support continues to rise, our commitment remains the same: to ensure that no one has to carry these experiences alone.
