Nature supported food for centuries and centuries. Steve Dutch, ranger at Woodoaks Farm brings nature back to the farm - where it belongs.

History tells us that when people get together – passionate, brave, won’t-take-no-people – they can change everything. We’re proof of it at the Soil Association. For 80 years, we’ve helped pioneer organic farming and champion better food systems, working alongside farmers, food businesses, schools, caterers and communities to build a shared vision of nature-friendly farming and healthier diets.

To mark our anniversary year, we’ll be spotlighting 80 ‘voices’ from across the food and farming system. Farmers, growers, foresters, educators, businesses and community leaders who are helping to revive nature on farmland and reshape how food is produced and consumed.

No one wants a dose of toxic chemicals in their sandwich! 🥪

Here in the UK, many crops are sprayed with glyphosate pre-harvest, in a process called pre-harvest desiccation - leaving pesticide residues in everyday foods like bread, cereals and beer.

There's a growing body of evidence linking glyphosate to cancer, even at levels that regulators say are safe. So why is this still allowed?

We’re calling on the government to cut the chemicals from our food and fields.

Sign our petition to demand:
1. A ban on using glyphosate to dry crops before harvest
2. Stronger protections on pesticide residues in food
3. Support for farmers to transition to more nature-friendly farming practices

Glyphosate is hitting the headlines. Traces of the chemical are making their way into food we eat every day - and now half the British public have it in their urine.

It's been classed as “probably carcinogenic” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer - so why is it still authorised as a pre-harvest desiccant?

Pre-harvest desiccation is the practice of spraying crops before harvest to dry them out. It works - but it also significantly increases the levels of glyphosate making its way into our food.

Riverford's open letter calls on the Government to ban this practice - and you can sign our petition👇

Iain Rogerson has seen wildlife returning to farms over his 28 year career as a Soil Association inspector - wildflower margins, insects and colour returning to the landscape.

The 80 'voices' represent many others - people across the movement who show us what’s possible. But the action of individuals isn’t enough. We need systemic change.

May's Good News in Organic

☕May saw Wake Up to Organic week - a celebration of organic and an amazing time to try simple swaps at the most important meal of the day to start the day as best you can. Regional press, retailers and brands from all over the country got involved to share breakfast recipes, hold in store breakfast tastings, and talk through early morning organic routines.

🌱Meanwhile, government data shows more farmers are converting their land to organic as the amount of land in conversion is up 63% since 2024. Scotland is leading the way, with figures up 36,700 hectares last year. Commenting on Scotland, Soil Association Certification Commercial Manager Alison Muirhead told the Times: "The government's been really vocal in the way that they've spoken about organic. They've said that it contributes to their net zero and biodiversity goals, and our global reputation as a country that produces quality food." Now, England and Wales need to follow in Scotland's footsteps with Organic Action Plans to boost organic land and meet growing consumer demand across the UK.

🍏A new report from Friends of the Earth comparing regenerative labels in the US found that those based on organic standards consistently scored the highest, as they warn against a 'patchwork' of labels risks confusing consumers.

🌽Finally, reports of growth from organic brands like Biona suggests the UK organic market continues to grow. You can read more about the current state of our organic market in Soil Association Certification's Organic Market Report 2026. Download it for free on our website.

Chicken is Britain's most popular meat, and demand continues to grow year on year. But our appetite for chicken comes at the expense of the environment.

🍗 The River Wye, known for its abundant wildlife and rich cultural history, is home to a huge number of farms producing over 20 million chickens at a time.

🐔 In 2024, our campaign called on the UK government to ban new intensive chicken units, and support farmers to exit this damaging industry. Two years on, this issue continues to cause devastation to our rivers.

💡Our Head of Food Policy Rob Percival highlights that we should be eating less chicken if we want to protect nature. Banning new intensive chicken units is a necessary first step. Our appetite for chicken comes at a real cost to our rivers and wildlife.

'Trees give us so much more than something to look at.'

With nature declining across the country, it's easy to feel hopeless - but there is another way.

History tells us that when people get together – passionate, brave, won’t-take-no-people – they can change everything. We’re proof of it at Soil Association. For 80 years, we’ve helped pioneer organic farming and champion better food systems, working alongside farmers, food businesses, schools, caterers and communities to build a shared vision of nature-friendly farming and healthier diets.

The 80 'voices' represent many others - people across the movement who show us what’s possible. But the action of individuals isn’t enough. We need systemic change.

In this video, hedge layer, land manager and landscaper Dean Dyer talks about how trees can be transformative, bringing nature back to farmland.

Soil Association Farm to Fork Ambassadors Michael Kennard, Kathy Slack and Tom Walker explain why waking up with organic is so important to getting set up for the day.

From sweet rhubarb porridge to savoury eggs on toast, beginning the day with an organic breakfast means benefitting from the connection between organic production and what we put in our bodies.
