We use the uniting power of food to cross divides and build bridges between communities. We are 91 ways to Build a Global City, a community-focused social enterprise based in Bristol named after the 91 languages spoken in Bristol. In 2015, we set up Bristol’s First International roving peace café, creating a safe space for people to meet, eat and connect. Our aim is to build a more global city thr
ough encouraging people to share their personal food journeys, recipes and passions. We believe this will help bridge the gaps between Bristol's 91 language communities and build a more united city. We also want to offer support to those who’d like to learn more about nutrition and well-being, so that they can improve the health and sustainability of themselves, their families, and our city. Our work is focused across the city of Bristol. We create inter-community events for people to meet, inspiring people to make genuine connections and build relationships with their neighbours from different backgrounds and cultures. Food is shared at each event; encouraging conversations about recipes, what they mean to us and the memories attached to this. Sharing recipes shares our culture and our traditions. In pre-covid times, we held regular community-based events and pop-up supper clubs, each showcasing the story of a community through its food. We have held Somali, Sudanese, Eritrean, French and Egyptian supper clubs and of course, a Bristolian supper club! Since our formation in 2015, we have brought together over 17,500 people from 85 languages at over 400 events. During Covid-19 turned quickly to support our communities during the pandemic emergency and put together weekly food and staple needs parcels for over 250 families. Our priorities are the areas of Bristol where people feel disenfranchised or isolated. Our ambition is to make every person who calls Bristol their home feel valued, safe and connected in our city. "In a world where the focus is often on our differences, 91Ways works simply to celebrate our diversity and our common humanity.”
