💨 VA**NG AND THYROID EYE DISEASE: WHAT DO WE KNOW?

We know that smoking can make Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) worse.
But what about va**ng?

Can you safely swap smoking for va**ng if you have Graves’ disease or TED?
The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

There is still very little research specifically looking at va**ng and TED. Early laboratory research has raised some interesting questions, but it cannot tell us what actually happens in people with TED who v**e.

So what do we know, what don’t we know, and why might va**ng matter in an inflammatory condition like TED?

🚭 Thyroid Eye Disease and smoking: why stopping matters

If you have Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) and you smoke, stopping smoking is one of the most important things you can do to help protect your eyes.

Smoking is strongly linked with TED. It can increase inflammation around the eyes, increase the risk of more severe disease, and may affect how well some treatments work.

But we know that stopping smoking can be difficult, especially when you are already dealing with the challenges of Graves’ disease and TED.

Busy first morning at TEDct at BOPSS, Sheffield 2026!

The response has been fantastic, and it’s been brilliant to see so much interest and engagement from everyone attending.

A real highlight for TEDct has been The TED Book — a comprehensive guide collaberatively created by our very own Chair, Rebecca Ford. It’s already proving to be a huge hit and a really valuable resource for those involved.

She shared what people living with Thyroid Eye Disease really want endocrinologists to understand — that beyond the tests and treatment plans, there’s a huge emotional and psychological impact.
