It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that, after 40 years as a society, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝗵𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. While Nightline has provided much support for students in Bristol in their times of need, we will no longer be able to continue this as we used to (but this is not the end!).

Due to the closure of the Nightline Association (NLA) announced earlier this year, we have had to end our operations. While 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝘂𝗻, after discussions with the Bristol SU, we have come to the agreement that Bristol Nightline will not be able to do so.

𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂?

For students at the University of Bristol, 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲. While we may not be operating a phone line or instant messaging service, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀, and to further the goal of improving student mental health. We are looking at a 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀, such as delivering society training, running peer-to-peer support sessions, and working on research in this field.

For students at other higher education institutions in Bristol, we realise that the closure of Nightline will leave a gap in student mental health provisions on campus. 𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 to bridge the gap, and we will encourage and support other student groups to 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 - 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
