This is Kathryn, one of our AMAZING BS4 Foodbank volunteers! She has been volunteering with us for seven months and we LOVE having her on the team. I chatted to her to find out more about her experience so far:
We always start with very important information:
‘Tea, coffee and favourite cake?’
Kathryn: Always a coffee and you can’t go wrong with a scone, jam first - the Cornish way!
‘What do you do the rest of the week when you are not volunteering at the Foodbank?’
Kathryn: I am a midwife, so at the hospital, and then I love swimming, spinning, and spending time with my family and friends.
‘What’s the best part about volunteering here?’
Kathryn: I love meeting the guests that come to the foodbank. I love chatting to them and finding out about their week and may be listening to them share why they have come to the foodbank if they feel they want to tell me. And I love the team work here - everyone works so well together and is always so positive and smiley!
‘Has anything about volunteering at the foodbank challenged or surprised you?’
Definitely the nature of those stories guests share of why they are there that day. It makes me remember that we could all be just a moment away from needing that help ourselves because it’s easy for things to go wrong. It reminds me to not be judgemental or assume why someone is there - we all need help sometimes. It’s so good to give them all the extra bread and fresh food as well as their food parcel, not all foodbanks do that.
‘Tell us what a typical shift looks like for you.’
Kathryn: I arrive in the morning at The Harbour to pack and get everything ready and then I help load the van and go over to St Barnabas and get everything set up. I love laying out all the tables with the items to distribute and chatting to all the guests as they come in and making them feel so welcome. I always get given a coffee, some cake and a cheese toastie and that’s it…my day is complete!
Kathryn, we are so grateful for all you do and your BRILLIANT smile and positiveness! Thank you.
