🌳 What trees can you make gin with? And which trees would you want beside you in an apocalypse?

These were just a couple of the questions explored on last night's excellent Twelve Trees Trail walk with local naturalist Steve England -Outdoor Learning as part of Festival of Nature. A fascinating evening of trees, fungi, fire-lighting, soap-making and plenty of surprising facts.

Many, many thanks to Festival of Nature for funding this walk with Steve. To find out what else is going on with FoN this weekend please go to https://www.bnhc.org.uk/festival-of-nature/

🌿 Two Saturday morning wildlife adventures on Horfield Common this summer! 🐞

We are delighted to have two of our brilliant local naturalists, Steve England and Eric Swithinbank, helping us take a closer look at the wildlife living on Horfield Common. Ideal for curious children, budding naturalists and nature-loving grown-ups.

🌸 POLLINATOR SAFARI – Saturday 20th June
A walk among the flowers, spotting bees, butterflies, moths, beetles and hoverflies as they go about their vital work. We will discover why pollinators matter, and how they help keep plants, wildlife and people thriving.

🐛 WALK ON THE WILD SIDE – Saturday 11th July
A mini-beast adventure around the Common, looking for the tiny creatures living under logs, among leaves, in the grass and in the wilder corners. Expect bugs, beetles, spiders, worms, woodlice and all sorts of wriggly, crawling wildlife.

🌿 Bee bread, bonking beetles and corky-fruited water-dropwort…

Just some of the things we discovered on Wednesday night’s Folklore of Wildflowers walk with local naturalist Eric Swithinbank.

After a very rainy day, the skies cleared just in time for a fascinating evening exploring the hidden stories, strange names and forgotten folklore behind some of the plants growing quietly around Horfield Common.

One of the nicest things was seeing everyone becoming excited about noticing and understanding the Common in a completely different way. Many of us pass these plants every day without noticing them, but once you begin learning their names, histories and folklore, the Common starts to feel like a completely different place.
