Calling all SEND families!!

Have you noticed that anyone working in the world of SEND loves an acronym and/or loves reeling out SEND specific jargon as if they are song words to a Harry Styles song?

YES?

Well, don't worry...

Our SEND Peer Support worker is here to go through the commonly used SEND terms. Each week, she will upload information on a particular SEND specific term or acronym which you can refer to.

This week, it is GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY (GDD).

GDD is diagnosed when a child is not meeting some of the expected developmental milestones for their age in two or more areas of their development. Children with more significant global delay are at risk of developing learning disabilities as they grow older.

This week is Learning Disability Week and the theme this year is "Do you see me?". The week is all about making sure that people with a learning disability are seen, heard, and valued by all.

Visit our Linktree for more information on GDD. đź”— Link is in the comments.

The theme for Infant Mental Health Awareness Week is Attunement.

This is the process of attending to your child’s non-verbal cues eg facial expressions, body language, and sounds—and then responding appropriately.

Sirona care & health Talk To Me campaign offers tips on ways to interact with your child so they can develop their communication skills and emotional development.

Today, our SEND Peer Support Worker talks about an idea to promote your baby's early communication.

It is important to build on your shared attention with your child and this where you focus on eye contact with the child and copy gestures and mouth movements made e.g. play Peekaboo and wait for their response.

You can then respond to the sounds they make and this is the start of turn taking.

This style of responsive parenting fosters emotional regulation and language development.

This week, it is ATTUNEMENT.

This is a process where the care giver is able to 'tune' in with a baby to regulate and soothe them. This co regulation can then lead to the baby self-regulating.
This week it is Infant Mental Health Awareness Week and the focus is Attunement.

Visit our Linktree (đź”— in the comments) for more information about Attunement.
