North Bristol & South Glos Foodbank

North Bristol & South Glos Foodbank Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income.

North Bristol & South Glos Foodbank exists to serve the communities of Horfield, Lockleaze, Southmead, Stokes Croft, Redcliffe, Mangotsfield, Patchway, Yate and Thornbury Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK. All food is donated by the public and sorted by volunteers. Frontline care professionals such as doctors

and social workers identify people in crisis and issue a food voucher. Clients receive three days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food in exchange for their food voucher. Foodbanks also make time to chat and to signpost clients to other helpful services. Hunger is not just a third world problem. Today people across the UK will struggle to feed themselves and their families. Redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying for heating during winter are just some of the reasons why people go hungry.

The cost of a weekly shop keeps climbing, and more people are finding the maths just doesn't add up.

Food experts warned the government that Britain is heading towards a food crisis. Heatwaves, a dry spring and the knock-on effects of the Iran war are all pushing prices up. They expect food to cost fifty per cent more this November than it did five years ago.

We see what that pressure does here in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire. When the budget stops stretching, more families run out of options before the end of the month.

Have a read of the full piece, and tell us what you're noticing about the cost of food where you are.

Jean-Louis leads the team at our Stokes Croft outlet. He picks up deliveries, greets guests, and makes sure everyone who comes through the door feels welcome. His take on volunteering? “You will love it.” Hard to argue with that.

Ed volunteers at our Redcliffe outlet. He packs food orders, helps people feel at ease, and, as he puts it, sometimes just gives someone a conversation they haven't had all week. That's the job, and he clearly loves it. Relaxed atmosphere, no pressure, everyone mucks in.

Nicki runs the storeroom at Mangotsfield. She knows what's in stock, what needs ordering, and how to pack a parcel that actually fits what someone's asked for. She calls the volunteer team “a family of helpers,” which feels about right.

If you've been thinking about signing up, her advice is pretty simple.

Steve is the outlet lead at our Mangotsfield outlet.

Every Friday he's there making sure the doors open, the volunteers are briefed, and people coming through get what they need. Ask him what he enjoys most and he'll tell you: it's the people. All sorts, from all kinds of places in life.

If you've ever thought about volunteering, he's got something to say to you. 👇

On Wednesday morning, someone broke into Ebenezer Church, in Horfield and stole items from both the church and our food bank. Our van was taken too, though a local resident spotted it and police recovered it the same day.

The response from the community has been remarkable. Over 130 comments, 200 shares, and more offers of practical help than we could have anticipated. People have written to tell us how the Foodbank has helped them, and so many have asked what they can do.

Stewart North, our chair of trustees, said the community has been amazing. We think so too.

Read our full update, including how you can help if you'd like:

A break-in at Ebenezer Church, Horfield targeted both the church and Foodbank. The community's response has been extraordinary.
