NATIONAL VACCINATION CAMPAIGN BEGINS

The 2026 National Vaccination Campaign against 18 diseases began on April 6 and ends on April 30. Co-President Rosario Murillo explained that vaccines will be administered against whooping cough, measles, polio, yellow fever, COVID-19, pneumonia, mumps, severe rotavirus diarrhea, hepatitis B, bacterial meningitis, diphtheria, and tetanus, among others. Vitamin A and deworming medication will also be provided for children.

[from a colleague): "The vaccination campaigns began in 1980 and were heralded worldwide because they reached a very high percentage of children. Polio and measles were wiped out and there hasn't been a case of yellow fever in many years. In recent years a high percentage of adults get vaccinated against flu, pneumonia and, of course, Covid. Women always get tetanus boosters when they get pregnant. You can take your baby or child to the public hospitals of which there are about 80 for their vaccines anytime. But the vaccination campaign is extremely well-organized and available close to anyone's home all over the country. It operates with health personnel and volunteers. I was a volunteer in San Juan de Limay in the 80s and went to the most distant villages with a doctor and nurse by horse carrying vaccines in small coolers. My son was born in 1988 and I was able to walk around the corner twice a year to get his appropriate vaccines. The campaign was one of the few good things that continued during the neoliberal governments from April 1990 to January 2007, but with much less money invested, fewer personnel and at times without all the vaccines they had in the 80s. Since 2007 the Sandinista government has added more vaccines and the population knows the importance of vaccines." (La Primerisima page, 6 April 2026)

UN "EXPERTS" FUELING WASHINGTON'S ATTACKS ON NICARAGUA

United Nations “experts” on Nicaragua, working to sanitize the effects of a failed, U.S.-inspired coup attempt, have not visited the country since the violence occurred eight years ago. Yet, for them, Nicaragua is “a giant prison” in which the Sandinista government “has effectively taken i...

FROM GANGS TO PEACE IN CIUDAD SANDINO - ARTICLE BY BECCA RENK FOSTER

“I thought they were going to kill us. The bullets were flying past our house, and I was so afraid a stray one would hit us,” Socorro tells me. She’s recounting a gang fight that took place more than a decade ago right outside the walls of mismatched metal sheeting that surround her garden near Managua.

UK INTRODUCES VISA REQUIREMENT FOR NICARAGUANS COMING TO THE UK

The UK Home Office said on 5th March: "The introduction of the visit visa requirement will include a transition period for nationals of Nicaragua and St Lucia to travel to the UK without a visa where they hold a confirmed travel booking made prior to the introduction. This period will commence at the same time as the visit visa requirement is introduced and run until six weeks after the introduction date: 15:00 BST on 16 April 2026. During this period, nationals of Nicaragua and St Lucia who hold a confirmed travel booking at the time of the introduction and an ETA, for travel to the UK within the six-week transition period, will not be required to obtain a visit visa before travel. Applications for an ETA for nationals of Nicaragua and St Lucia will close at 15:00 GMT on 5 March 2026. Nationals who hold confirmed bookings for travel to the UK on a date after the transition period ends will need to obtain a visa in advance of travel. Amending the date of travel on a confirmed booking to an earlier date that falls within the transition period would still require the person to have a visa."

There is no UK Embassy in Nicaragua so applicants will have to travel to either Honduras or Costa Rica for an interview.

Home Office adds: "There are a significant number of nationals of Nicaragua who travel to the UK purporting to be visitors but then claim asylum on arrival at port. Between January 2022 and December 2025, 609 nationals of Nicaragua claimed asylum, with 505 (83%) of these claims made at port. While the number of people claiming asylum has fluctuated, numbers have remained significant throughout this period. Nicaraguan asylum claims made at the UK border add significantly to operational pressure at the border, diverting staff from other priorities. All asylum claims place additional resource pressure on the borders and migration system. There were 261 nationals of Nicaragua receiving asylum support at the end of the most recent published quarter (December 2025), of which 253 were residing in accommodation provided by the Home Office."

From a colleague in Nicaragua "These figures are trivial - around 150 per year, when the UK received 100,000 asylum claims last year. In fact the claims from Guatemala, Honduras (around 1,000 annually) and El Salvador are much higher than Nicaragua.

NEW SCHOOL YEAR STARTS

January 26th saw the start of the new school year across Nicaragua including in Puerto Morazan. The Sandinista government is providing a student "bonus" of £40 for every child who is enrolled in preschool. The bonus is also available for children enrolled in years one and two of primary school. The families can collect the "bonus" from the bank. The Sandinistas are trying to get all children to stay in primary school and finish year six. To this end they have built lots of new primaries and renovated the others as well as training up and employing 4,000 new primary teachers.

BRISTOL RALLY IN SUPPORT OF VENEZUELA

Despite the sub-zero temperatures, over 80 protesters took part in a rally yesterday evening in support of Venezuelan sovereignty and against the actions of the Trump administration. A BLINC representative was invited to speak and outlined Nicaragua's ongoing struggle against US illegal sanctions as well as how Nicaragua defeated the US funded attempted coup in 2018.

The Nicaraguan government has called for "respect for the sovereignty of the people of Venezuela," and has "joined the outcry of the entire world, which, with deep rejection, affirms that we will continue fighting for international law and sovereignties to prevail." It also emphasizes that with the events in Venezuela, peace has been "profoundly wounded" and that "the human family, the community of nations, urges that it be reinstated as an absolute reflection of the dignity of peoples."

U.S. BOMBS VENEZUELA AND KIDNAPS PRESIDENT

From: Michelle & Medea at CODEPINK in the US

The Trump administration has launched a large-scale military strike inside Venezuela, hitting multiple military installations and causing explosions in and around Caracas, an unprovoked and illegal act of aggression that endangers millions of lives and threatens to plunge our hemisphere into chaos. During this assault, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were kidnapped and forcibly removed from the country, a flagrant violation of international law and an act of war.

Now Trump is openly threatening a "second wave" of strikes could take place and declared that those who remain loyal to Venezuela's government will have a "bad future." This is a colonial act of aggression and collective punishment that points to a prolonged conflict with significant human costs.

The people of the United States did not ask for this. The people of Venezuela do not deserve this.

Let's be clear: this is not a quick, surgical action with minimal casualties. It is the start of a prolonged war, one that will mean ongoing bombardment, civilian suffering, and regional chaos.

These attacks are a dramatic escalation of the economic and political war the United States has waged on Venezuela for nearly two decades. From the Bush administration onward, and intensified under Obama and Trump, Venezuela has been targeted through sanctions, blockades, asset seizures, cyber attacks, covert operations, and psychological warfare.

In recent months alone, the United States has:

* bombed at least 36 civilian and commercial boats in the Caribbean and Pacific, killing more than 117 people, many of them fishermen and workers;

* seized two oil tankers carrying over 1.8 million barrels of Venezuelan oil;

* imposed what U.S. officials themselves have called a "total and complete blockade" on Venezuelan oil shipments;

* designated the democratically elected government of Venezuela a so-called "Foreign Terrorist Organization," an unprecedented and dangerous escalation;

* openly backed opposition figures to advance a policy of regime change;

* and engaged in psychological warfare, issuing threats of further attacks and warning Venezuelans of a "bad future" if they do not submit.

These actions follow decades of unilateral coercive measures, including an illegal sanctions regime that researchers estimate has contributed to the deaths of over 100,000 people, the theft of Venezuelan companies such as CITGO, and the seizure of billions of dollars in sovereign assets held abroad.

Let's talk about why.

Trump claims this war, and the kidnapping of a sitting president is about drug trafficking. That is a lie. It is the familiar cover story for regime change. "Drug trafficking" in Venezuela is this generation's "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq.

There is no evidence to justify U.S. military action. Even U.S. government data shows that Venezuela plays virtually no role in fentanyl or narcotics trafficking into the United States. Yet this false narrative has already been used to justify U.S. strikes on fishing boats in the Caribbean, killing dozens of people without charges, trials, or due process.

Venezuela might not have a lot of drugs, but it does have a LOT of oil. The country is home to the world's largest oil reserves. Since Hugo Chávez took office in 1999, Venezuelans have been reclaiming their natural resources to fund social programs in health, education, and housing, redirecting profits that once flowed to benefit rich oil executives in the U.S. back to the Venezuelan people. That alone has been enough to put Venezuela in Washington's crosshairs.

This is a war for oil, power, and regime change. And now it has crossed an unmistakable red line with the kidnapping of Venezuela's president.

Been there, done that.
We need to say NO.
