Jessie May

Jessie May Providing specialist palliative, end of life & bereavement care for terminally ill children. Children who will sadly not live to reach adulthood.

Jessie May supports families who have children with life limiting illnesses. Families with a terminally ill child often find juggling ‘round the clock care with everyday tasks an overwhelming struggle. Parents and their children cannot do the things you and I take for granted; things like having a job, going on a family outing, or simply being able to sleep through the night. Our nurses visit thes

e families in their own homes, providing expert care for terminally ill children. These visits enable parents to step away from their caring responsibilities for a few hours, enabling them to pop out to the shops, help their other children with their homework or simply to sit down and eat dinner. Our service is so special because it enables a parent to have a break, confident that their son or daughter is in the care of someone who understands the complexities of their medical needs, and crucially someone they trust. Jessie May is providing a vital service in the heart of the Bristol community. In addition to respite care at home, Jessie May also provides nurse’s telephone support, bereavement support, holiday respite sessions and family fun days. There are of course things we cannot do: we cannot cure, we cannot change a diagnosis, but we can make a real difference to struggling families and the precious lives of terminally ill children.

What do you think of when you hear the words "children's palliative care"?

For many parents, it's a phrase that brings fear and uncertainty. But as Jessie May mum Kelly explains, once she understood what children's palliative care really meant, she saw it as a source of support, comfort and reassurance.

For Children’s Hospice Week, Kelly and her Jessie May nurse, Ash, sat down together to share an honest conversation about the realities of children's palliative care and the difference it makes to families every day.

Every childhood deserves to be rich in joy, love and shared memories.

That’s how Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales opens her message in support of Children’s Hospice Week, and it’s something we couldn’t agree more.

Every day, at Jessie May, we support children with serious illness and their families to live as fully as possible.

What does home mean to you?

When we asked some of the children we support at Jessie May to answer that question , their responses were full of the things many of us would recognise: family, comfort, favourite places, pets, laughter, and love.

Home means something to all of us.

For families caring for a child with a life-limiting condition, it means all these things, and more. That place of safety and peace in an uncertain world.

At Jessie May, that's why we provide hospice care at home.

We know how important that space is. Our nurses step into families' homes not to disrupt them, but to support them. To provide expert care where children feel safest. To give families breathing room. To help make difficult days a little easier.

This Children's Hospice Week, we're celebrating the importance of home care and the families who trust us to share that space with them.

Because as these wonderful drawings remind us, home isn't just where we live.

💜 It's where our hearts are.

Do you think you know what children's hospice care is?

Many people hear the words "children's palliative care" and think it's only about end-of-life care.

The reality is so much more than that.

It's about helping families make memories. It's about laughter, friendship, respite, advocacy, expert nursing care, emotional support, and helping children live as well as possible, for as long as possible.

This Children's Hospice Week, we're asking for one simple thing:

**please share this video.**

The more people who understand what children's hospice care really is, the more awareness we can raise for the children and families who rely on it every day.

Thank you to Freya, Zeniah, Michaela and their families for helping us tell this story 💙

Today we're proud to join organisations across the UK in marking the start of Children’s Hospice Week 2026.

Children’s hospices provide vital support which helps thousands of families of children with serious illnesses live as well as possible as they navigate their child’s life, death and bereavement. Yet while demand for services continues to grow, funding is not keeping pace.

At Jessie May, we know the difference specialist hospice-at-home care can make. It means expert nursing care, emotional support, advocacy, respite, and helping families make the most of every moment together.

Over the coming week, we'll be sharing family stories, nurse perspectives, and real examples of the impact children's hospice care has on families across Bristol and the surrounding areas.

We hope you'll follow along, share these stories, and help us raise awareness of why this care is so important.

This National Carers Week, we're highlighting the experiences of parent carers supporting children with complex medical needs.

For Abir, caring for her son Bassel means managing seizures, medication, feeding support, hospital admissions and the ever-present risk that an everyday virus could become life-threatening.

Like many unpaid carers, she carries immense responsibility while advocating for her child and navigating a complex healthcare system.

Her story demonstrates why practical respite, emotional support and specialist hospice-at-home care are so important for families facing these challenges every day.
