The second piece in our next programme will be Mahler’s wistful ‘Songs of a Wayfarer’, performed by baritone Paul Grant… more on him in tomorrow’s post.

Written in Mahler’s twenties after an unfulfilled love affair, the songs follow a wandering traveller moving through nature, memory, and solitude, with music that shifts from folk-like simplicity to extraordinary emotional intensity.

What makes the piece especially fascinating is how closely it connects to Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 — themes from the songs reappear in the symphony, almost as if the wayfarer’s journey continues on a larger orchestral scale. Beautiful, intimate, and unmistakably Mahler. 🎻🌿

Calling all violinists!
BCO are in need of a few additional violin players to boost our ranks as we take on Elgar's mighty 1st Symphony this term for our concert at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol on Saturday 27th June.
The first rehearsal showed us we are in for a very enjoyable term under the baton of our wonderful Music Director Alex Mackinder.

Lots of fantastic music happening in Bristol this Saturday evening!

We’re excited to be returning this Saturday to our home of St George’s for the last concert of 2025. Join us for a wonderful programme conducted by Rory Macdonald.

We open with Berlioz’ Overture to Béatrice et Bénédict. Followed by Schumann’s glorious Piano Concerto in A minor performed by our friend Llŷr Williams who’ll be making his second appearance with us. The evening concludes with Sibelius’ ethereal Symphony No.6 in D minor - the perfect piece for a winter’s night.
