Well hello! 👋

We’re starting rehearsals for our Autumn concert this Wednesday and are very excited to be working again with our brand new Musical Director Simon Hilberding, Musician

An internationally experienced conductor and professional orchestral trumpeter, Simon has worked with orchestras across the UK, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.

Today, as a conductor, he believes that the very best performances come from trust, a positive culture and shared musical purpose.

His aim? To create concerts full of confidence, expression and excitement for musicians and audiences alike.
We're looking forward to making music together 🎶😁🎶

🎶🎵 Join us at St George's Bristol on Saturday 26th September for the penultimate concert in our Brahms Symphony series! 🎵🎶

The series continues with Brahms' 2nd Symphony, nicknamed his pastoral by admirers keen to keep Beethoven comparisons going after calling his 1st symphony Beethoven’s 10th. Alongside this hymn to nature, we are delighted to welcome rising star baritone Malachy Frame to sing Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer.

🎵We also look forward to performing a new composition inspired by Brahms by local composer Sophie Winfield🎵

A former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Elizabeth is much in demand as a recitalist, and is also firmly established as a lyric soprano.

Now a prolific recording artist, she has released discs of Bach Cantatas, Strauss Lieder, Mozart Opera Arias, Alessandro Scarlatti Arias (which she researched), CPE Bach’s Magnificat, JS Bach’s St John & St Matthew Passions, Handel Brockes Passion and Mahler Symphony No 4, to name a few, winning many awards and accolades along the way. Most recently her recording of Britten’s Spring Symphony with Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra was named Orchestral Album of the year by Classica magazine.

The second piece in our next programme will be Mahler’s wistful ‘Songs of a Wayfarer’, performed by baritone Paul Grant… more on him in tomorrow’s post.

Written in Mahler’s twenties after an unfulfilled love affair, the songs follow a wandering traveller moving through nature, memory, and solitude, with music that shifts from folk-like simplicity to extraordinary emotional intensity.

What makes the piece especially fascinating is how closely it connects to Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 — themes from the songs reappear in the symphony, almost as if the wayfarer’s journey continues on a larger orchestral scale. Beautiful, intimate, and unmistakably Mahler. 🎻🌿
