Jacari Jacari is a small charity in Bristol and Oxford providing 1 to 1 tuition for children who use English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Award-winning small charity improving the confidence and language skills of children with English as an additional language in Oxford and Bristol through our free tuition programme delivered by volunteer tutors. Volunteers, most of whom are students at local universities, tutor children in their home/school and online for one hour a week during term-time to deliver fun and informal English lessons

. No teaching experience is required to volunteer with us and you do not need to speak any foreign languages. For more information and to complete an application form, please visit www.jacari.org. ✏️Peer Tutoring is back at Montpelier High School (MHS)!

We are so excited to have re-started the peer tutoring project at MHS. In 2022, they were the first school where Jacari ran a peer tutoring pilot.

It was so lovely and inspiring to hear all of the sixth form volunteers’ ideas and motivations for getting involved during their peer tutoring training sessions.

Peer tutoring offers a great opportunity for both tutoring and mentorship for EAL pupils. Peer tutors can additionally gain valuable experience in communication, leadership, and facilitation.

Peer tutoring sessions also continue weekly at our other partner schools in Bristol - Bristol Cathedral Choir School and St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple School. Jacari is currently expanding peer tutoring to schools in Oxford - stay tuned for updates on this!

We're delighted to introduce Anna, our new Oxford Coordinator!

Hi, I’m Anna, covering for Shaiane during her maternity leave at Jacari Oxford. Thanks to everyone for their warm welcome to Jacari! It’s a privilege to be part of Jacari’s work in Oxford. We are able to work with some fantastic pupils and volunteers, helping each young person to develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive. I’ve particularly enjoyed hearing about the relationships that have formed through our sessions, and the fascinating history of Jacari’s nearly 70 years in Oxford.

I’ve lived in Oxford for 2 years, and have loved getting to know the city and its many communities. Outside of my work I love rowing, and a highlight of last year was competing at the City of Oxford Royal Regatta.
I look forward to getting to know more of our volunteers and young people - please do come by our new office to say hello!

👋 Meet Moira, Jacari’s coordinator for our peer tutoring project in Bristol:

Hi there, I’m Moira (she/her) and I’m very excited to have joined the Jacari team in Bristol!

I have experience working with children and young people and in volunteer and English conversation class coordination. I am also involved in various capacities in solidarity with migrant communities and am passionate about the power of social connections and of safe, supportive, and welcoming spaces.

Peer tutoring is a great example of one of these spaces. It’s been so lovely to see it in action and I’m looking forward to supporting with the development of this project and to ensuring this development is led by the experiences and ideas of the students involved - both volunteer tutors and pupils.

Our Story

Jacari is a student charity based in Oxford* providing at-home, 1-1 teaching support for children who have English as an Additional Language (EAL). Volunteers from the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes visit the homes of local children for one hour a week to deliver fun and informal English lessons. In so doing, our volunteers help their pupils reach their full potential and grow in confidence.
