Empire Fighting Chance Transforming thousands of young lives through boxing since 2006. 🥊
(1)

Empire Fighting Chance has a dual purpose; to create champions in the ring, and to create champions in life. We enable young people to fulfil their broader potential by raising aspiration and self confidence to make better and informed life choices, staying clear of crime and violence to progress in education and employment.

Earlier this year, we began working with Avon and Somerset Police’s Early Intervention Team to create a clear route into our programmes for young people at risk of becoming involved in crime. 🥊

Officers visited Empire yesterday to learn more about our Box Champions programme and the support we offer.

The visit was an opportunity to see first-hand how our combination of non-contact boxing, psychology and trusted coach mentors helps us engage young people and support them to make positive choices.

By building strong relationships with organisations working with young people, we can offer more of the right support at the right time.

More to come on this visit. 👀

How do we know our programmes are working in schools?🥊📊

A lot of what we do at Empire is driven by data. It helps us understand what’s working and gives schools and funders evidence of the results.

At in South Yorkshire, young people are taking part in Box Champions through , whose gym is based inside the school.

As part of our network of 73 clubs, DC Boxing has adapted our Box Champions programme to work within the school, making the gym a resource for the school and wider Empire community.

Maltby Academy has been collecting data on the programme, giving them a way to understand what’s happening for the young people taking part. The results show the programme is working.

It’s another example of how we use data to understand what’s happening for young people taking part in our programmes.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re sharing Enya's story.

The theme for 2026 is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

For young people who are experiencing poor mental health, being listened to and understood can make a huge difference.

At 15, Enya’s anxiety had become so severe that she struggled to eat and was barely able to attend school. She often felt isolated and felt that the people around her didn’t understand what she was going through.

Then she came to Empire.

Through intensive one-to-one support, including non-contact boxing and psychology, Enya began to find ways to manage her anxiety, rebuild her confidence and feel stronger.

“I put my gloves on and feel ten times different when I take them off. I feel a lot calmer, a lot more at ease and a lot happier.”

Her school attendance rose to 84%, she developed a healthier relationship with food and she went on to complete a coaching qualification with Empire because she wanted to support other young people.

Enya’s story shows what can happen when a young person’s experience is heard, understood and supported.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s share young people’s voices far and wide.

What difference can the right support make to a young person's life at school?

At Evergreen Primary Academy, the impact of Empire's 1:1 sessions has been clear. Principal Kerry Coote has seen young people make progress in managing their emotions, building confidence and developing more positive relationships with peers and adults.

As Kerry explains, some of the most significant outcomes have been in mental health and wellbeing, emotional regulation, perseverance and resilience.

🚗 774 miles. Four boxing clubs. One purpose.

Recently, our partnership manager Ben has been visiting boxing clubs in our network, catching up with people we've trained, seeing how their clubs are developing and finding out where Empire can offer more support.

From new gyms being built to new programmes responding to local needs, every club is doing things in its own way.

We're not trying to create another Empire in every town and city. We're supporting local clubs to use their own knowledge, relationships and understanding of their communities to support young people.

Take a look through the photos to see his stops along the way. 🥊

How does our programme build confidence and resilience in schools? 🥊

The engagement games we play with young people might look like lots of fun, and they are. But there’s a purpose behind them.

Each activity is designed around the 20 Empire principles. They give young people opportunities to tackle challenges, try things that might not come easily and see what happens when they keep going.

One example is the Memory Pad Game, which uses our Magic of Mistakes principle to give young people an opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them.

These activities are part of how we use boxing and engagement to help young people develop skills that can support them both in and beyond school.

Every young person has different reasons for struggling to engage with school.

Our work with schools starts by understanding those young people and what they need to engage.

Through structured non-contact boxing, mentoring and psychologically informed support, we help young people build confidence, develop emotional regulation and resilience, re-engage with education and make positive choices.

We’ve been working with schools in Bristol and the surrounding area for more than 15 years and have seen some incredible results, with 90% of young people who've completed our Box Champions programme reporting that they felt more resilient.

Therapy done differently 🥊

Growing up today is tough - social media, relationships, school, work and an uncertain future. For young people dealing with complex needs, finding the right way into support matters.

We’ve learned that changing the setting can change the relationship. When a therapist and young person are moving, doing and talking alongside each other, it can create a different dynamic and, for some young people, that can make it easier to engage.

That’s the thinking behind Box Therapy: combining movement and activities with one-to-one therapeutic support.

Over the last three years, we’ve trained mental health practitioners across the UK to deliver this approach, helping more young people access therapeutic support in a way that works for them.
