Chiva Projects Chiva works to enhance the health and wellbeing of children living with HIV in the UK and Ireland.

Chiva’s mission is to ensure that children, young people and young adults growing up with HIV become healthier, happier and more in control of their own futures. With so many young people who were born with HIV in the UK and Ireland now growing up and transitioning to adult care, Chiva supports children, young people and young adults living with HIV up to age 25. There are further opportunities for people beyond that age too. For example, adults can help lead Chiva events and activities for younger people. Chiva aims to:

- Enhance health and psychosocial wellbeing
- Reduce isolation
- Ensure young people’s voices inform policy and service and practice development
- Reduce HIV stigma
- Increase knowledge and understanding of HIV

What have we been up to?

We had the privilege to be selected to facilitate a skill building session alongside READY Movement

Our workshop focused on why co production and youth leadership matters in the HIV and SRHR sector. Enhancing skills in advocacy and innovation planning as well as building global partnerships.

Participants were able to identify challenges/barries they face within their communities and organisations. They then leaned into what actions they could put into place in response.

We also had a stall in the marketplace were delegates could take some resources and learn more about the work we do in the UK 🇬🇧

4 of our posters were displayed and 2 has the opportunity to be guided talks by us. This was a great opportunity to deep dive into our projects and research.

Amanda spoke within a workshop symposium on the importance of families and highlighted the findings from our work with the families residential.

We have been busy! What a fantastic opportunity for our organisation to be in the room and make new connections, learn from each other and implement our ideas to make positive impact within the services we provide.

It's a wrap! We've had such a fanstatic time being at the workshop in Bangkok 🇹🇭✨️

Fantastic to be in a conference with adolescents taking centre stage both as the focus of talks but also and more importantly being in the room, sharing ideas, priorities and challenges we all need to be listening to.

Here are just some of the key learning highlights -

1. How HIV is impacting youth populations across Asia - 50% of new HIV acquisitions in Thailand in 2025 were among adolescents

2. A strong mix of youth representatives from across the globe calling for youth leadership and engagement at all levels of the HIV response but critically the need to be in positions to influence legislation and policy

3. How HIV clinical care can adapt and clinic models which centre community based and community led approaches, improve access and support engagement

4. Where we are with the treatment pipeline for prevention and treatment? Long acting treatments have exciting prospects on the horizon however access to these will be critical and equity a real concern - how do we ensure that those who need these treatments the most are not waiting years to access? Especially children and adolecents

We have loved being in the room and we look forward to attending more spaces that have impact.

Photos are in!

Our Freedom to Be (F2B) camp in August was a chance for young people to build connections with peers in an inclusive and welcoming space, learning more about HIV whilst joining an action-packed week of workshops and activities, from adventure sports to creative arts, yoga and wellbeing.

Incredible developments in HIV treatment and care over the last decade have drastically changed the outlook for young people living with HIV who can now expect a near-normal life expectancy, and can enjoy healthy sexual relationships without fear of passing on HIV.

However, we know that some young people living with HIV may still have additional complex medical and psychological needs.

This we're sharing our new guidance for healthcare professionals which provides specific knowledge and guidance around the sexual and reproductive health needs of young people living with HIV.

It aims to promote best practice in the care of young people where HIV has been acquired either perinatally or via other routes.

Chiva is heading to Bangkok!

Next week, we’ll be joining colleagues from around the world at the 10th International Workshop on Adolescence, SRHR & HIV - bringing our experience and learning on supporting children, adolescents and young adults living with HIV.

💡 Skill-building session | Tuesday 22 September | 3pm
Together with Y+ Global we’ll explore how to develop programmes for adolescents and young adults living with HIV, through co-production and promoting youth leadership.

🎤 Oral abstract | Wednesday 23 September | 11am
Amanda Ely, Chiva CEO, will present our work on strengthening family resilience through therapeutic residentials for children and adolescents living with HIV, and their families.

📌 Plus, look out for five Chiva posters showcasing more of our work and learning throughout the workshop – and pick up some Chiva print resources which will be available on the market table event on Tuesday.

One of our highlights of the summer was hosting a picnic for families living with HIV at a London park. The Chiva team really enjoyed seeing everyone and hearing all about their different life stories and journeys with HIV.

Some of the families who came along had previously attended Chiva’s Families' Weekend residential and they were encouraging others to give that a go too – highlighting the value of peer support and meet-ups throughout the year to nurture friendships.
