Chiva Projects

Chiva Projects Chiva works to enhance the health and wellbeing of children living with HIV in the UK and Ireland.

Chiva’s mission is to ensure that children, young people and young adults growing up with HIV become healthier, happier and more in control of their own futures. With so many young people who were born with HIV in the UK and Ireland now growing up and transitioning to adult care, Chiva supports children, young people and young adults living with HIV up to age 25. There are further opportunities fo

r people beyond that age too. For example, adults can help lead Chiva events and activities for younger people. Chiva aims to:

- Enhance health and psychosocial wellbeing
- Reduce isolation
- Ensure young people’s voices inform policy and service and practice development
- Reduce HIV stigma
- Increase knowledge and understanding of HIV

With Chiva colleagues based around the UK, we all meet up twice a year to reflect on our work and make plans.

This week we met in Birmingham to consider what our strategic plan for 2027-2029 should look like and to think what is most important to prioritise in our work supporting young people living with HIV who are growing into adulthood.

We have so many ideas! And look forward to taking these to the board of Trustees for further discussion.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week and this year’s theme is: Action.

Action: for yourself, for someone else, for all of us.

Chiva knows that for some young people growing up with HIV, they don’t just need support attending appointments and taking HIV medication, they sometimes need mental health support too. And that’s okay. That’s why we’re here taking action, providing holistic support all year round.

The Chiva Youth Committee podcast shares honest conversations about HIV, stigma, identity and mental wellbeing.

Listen if you’re a young person living with HIV. Listen if you’re a member of the public wanting an insight into lived experiences of people living with HIV. Listen if you’re a health professional and want to understand better how to support young people living with HIV.

Listening is part of taking action.

A small number of young people with perinatally acquired HIV need access to a drug called lencapavir to save their lives.

For these people, traditional antiretroviral treatment no longer works for them. This means their treatment options are limited and life-expectancy is shortened.

✅ Lenacapavir could save their lives
✅ It’s already approved in Scotland
❌ Access in NHS England is still not secured

Sign the petition calling on Wes Streeting MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to secure access to lenacapavir now: https://nat.eaction.online/lenacapavir

Please share this important message!

It’s time to get lenacapavir approved by NHS England and out to people who urgently need it.

We’re delighted to launch our first ever children’s story book which aims to help children who are growing up living with perinatally acquired HIV, to understand their HIV better.

The story is co-created with children and parents and was inspired by their experiences of living with HIV.

Thank you to BBC Bristol for the article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx294181kreo

Copies of the book are now available in paediatric HIV clinics around the country and can be ordered free from Chiva by contacting: [email protected]
