The Southmead Breast-cancer Unit Support Trust was set up in 1991 by a group of three patients who had been treated for breast cancer at Frenchay Hospital. They were alerted to the pressing need for specialist equipment, largely unavailable on the NHS, to provide quicker and better diagnosis of breast abnormalities.
