Soil Association Food for Life

Soil Association Food for Life Food for Life is part of the Soil Association, innovating solutions to complex problems around food from the ground up. How did we get here?

Working with Local Authorities, communities, caterers, schools and beyond to improve access to healthy and sustainable food for all. We started life in 2007 thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund which enabled us to set up the Food for Life Partnership, led by the Soil Association with a coalition of four other national charities who are very much part of the fabric of Food for Life today. https://foodforlife.org.uk/about-us

We’ve officially wrapped up this year’s , and what an amazing month it’s been! 💚✨

From schools to community groups to families at home, we’ve loved seeing people across the country cooking together, sharing meals, boosting food confidence and finding fun new ways to reduce waste.

One of our highlights was visiting Cook and Share events in Walsall and Lancashire. Seeing children getting hands-on with food by chopping, mixing, tasting and proudly sharing what they made was a beautiful reminder of how powerful cooking can be for building confidence, connection and joy. 🧑‍🍳

Thank you to everyone who took part, shared their ideas, hosted events and helped make this year’s Cook and Share so special. 💚🍽️

What a wonderful event, and a perfect way to wrap up ! 💚

What a day!

Yesterday, the Food for Life team hosted a jam-packed event in Walsall, with over 100 people in attendance the team brought together schools and community groups from across the borough to celebrate the impactful progress being made to transform local food environments.

The Food for Life training team delivered engaging, hands-on sessions where children got stuck into cooking and planting activities, helping them explore where food comes from and what good, nutritious food really looks like, as well as celebrating month, with demonstrations of some of the easy to prepare recipes.

The Cool Food Pro team ran an interactive stand demonstrating how the environmental calculator can support schools and caterers to make small, practical changes that add up to big reductions in carbon emissions.

Two of the local schools took to the stage to share fantastic presentations, highlighting the real, meaningful change happening on the ground.

And to top it all off, Walsall Council catering, who are currently working towards their Food for Life Served Here Bronze Award, served a delicious lunch showcasing nutritious, seasonal food. The pumpkin pie was a firm favourite!

It was inspiring to see so many passionate groups uniting around a shared mission: changing food for good.

Beans are the ultimate all-rounder!

They're a powerhouse for your health, planet and pocket, and we're absolutely loving the campaign by The Food Foundation. At Food for Life, we are big bean champions, and encourage caterers to level-up their legume content in our Food for Life Served Here standards. Here are just a few reasons why:

Packed with fibre, protein and essential nutrients like potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc, beans bring both nutrition and flavour to any dish. Plus, they're super affordable, and can be added to meals to stretch them further.

Beans are used in cuisines all around the world, and are a brilliant way to mix up your meals and try something new.

With an air fryer, anyone can cook!

They are a great way to start your cooking journey because they are easy to use, take up little space and cheaper to run than an oven.

It’s a great way to start your cooking journey because it’s easy to use, takes up little space and is cheaper to run than an oven. Why not try to make some tasty wedges? You can find a recipe in our toolkit:
