Do you use a Direct Payment in South Gloucestershire?

South Gloucestershire Council is asking people about their experiences of adult Direct Payment support, to understand what's working well and where improvements can be made.

Surveys have been sent by post or email to people who use adult direct payments, people who receive a direct payment for someone else or people who help someone manage their direct payment.

If you've received a survey, you can complete it online using the unique code sent to you. The deadline is tomorrow, Friday 16 October 2026, so there's still time to share your experiences.

Complete the survey here: https://orlo.uk/Direct_Payment_Survey_s6LLP

Alternatively, call 01454 866246 to speak to the council about taking part.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week, 10th to 17th October, is a week of action and solidarity with people affected by hate crime and discrimination.

With hate rising across our communities, WECIL stands against all forms of hate and discrimination. We believe everyone has the right to live free from harassment and abuse.

As part of Bristol Hate Crime and Discrimination Services, we provides free, confidential support to people affected by hate crime or discrimination.

Not sure whether what happened was a hate crime? That’s OK. You can still talk to us about what happened and how we may be able to help. You do not have to report anything to the police.

If you or someone you know has experienced disability-related hate crime or discrimination, find out how we can support you here: https://wecil.org.uk/our-community/hate-crime-support/

Tomorrow, Saturday 10th October, is World Mental Health Day!

This year’s theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.” Talking openly about mental health matters, but so does listening. Being heard can be an important first step towards getting the right support, yet too many people still face barriers when they reach out for help.

This World Mental Health Day, organisations including the World Health Organisation (WHO), Mind and the Mental Health Foundation are highlighting the importance of better conversations, better listening and better access to support.

At WECIL, we know that mental health and Disability are experienced differently by everyone. Tomorrow is an opportunity to listen, challenge stigma and make sure people can access support in ways that work for them.

Are you a Personal Assistant? What would make your working life better?

The Adult Social Care Workforce Survey 2026 is your opportunity to share what it’s really like to be a PA and what could make a difference. From pay and workload to wellbeing, training and development, the survey asks about the issues that affect your day-to-day working life.

It’s being conducted by Ipsos, in partnership with Skills for Care, the University of Kent, and the Department of Health and Social Care. Your responses will contribute to a clearer picture of the adult social care workforce and help inform future government policy and workforce support.

If you’re a PA, please take part! And if you know other PAs, please share the survey so their experiences can be represented too.

October is ADHD Awareness Month! ADHD is often misunderstood, and assumptions about how it presents can create barriers for neurodivergent people in education, employment and everyday life.

We believe inclusion starts with listening to lived experience, and recognising that everyone has different access requirements. ADHD Awareness Month is an opportunity to learn more, and consider how we can make our workplaces, services and communities more accessible.

Creating an inclusive community means recognising that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. By listening to neurodivergent people and making space for different ways of thinking and working, we can help create environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

What does the public really think about financial support for Disabled people? New research from the British Social Attitudes survey gives us an unusually detailed insight into what the public itself thinks.

The results suggest widespread support for the fundamental principle behind PIP: that Disabled people who face additional costs because of barriers to everyday activities should receive additional financial support. But when researchers explored where people thought eligibility should be drawn, the findings became more complicated.

Our recent news article looks at what the research tells us about public attitudes towards PIP and why the findings are particularly relevant as the Timms Review considers its future.

Direct Payments should give people genuine choice and control over how their care and support is arranged. But is everyone getting the support they need?

WECIL was pleased to contribute to new research from The King's Fund exploring why Direct Payment uptake varies across England and what can be done to improve it.

The findings highlight inconsistent support, reinforcing the importance of WECIL's work with the South West Direct Payment Support Provider network to develop the Gold Standard for councils commissioning Direct Payment support.

Direct Payments should give people more choice and control over how their care and support is arranged. But what should that look like in practice?

A recent report by Professor Luke Clements looks at Direct Payments in social care and highlights important developments, decisions and learning around how Direct Payments should work in practice.

The report highlights that Direct Payments should be flexible and person-centred. They should not be made unnecessarily complicated, restrictive or difficult to manage.
