We're so delighted that our dementia support work has been awarded £18,000 from the National Lottery Awards for All.

An absolutely huge thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund for supporting our three Woodland Wellbeing dementia groups in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

These funds will mean people living with dementia and their carers can regularly spend time outdoors having fun and connecting with others in nature 🍂

Having a community around you who gets it and being able to enjoy the moment is so important - and this funding helps make this possible. As a carer from one of our groups said, "it is wonderful to see those little moments when he is noticing and enjoying nature” 💚

As ever, these groups wouldn't happen without the partnership and support of Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service and Best Life - a huge thank you to National Lottery from all of us.

The missing piece of Great Avon Wood has been found 🧩

Avon Needs Trees, Forest of Avon and Western Forest UK are thrilled to announce the purchase of a new site near Pensford.

This winter, we'll be planting 6,500 new native trees on the site. It will become the fourth section of Great Avon Wood, bringing the three existing woodland sections together for the first time.

By connecting these habitats, we're creating a vital wildlife corridor where nature can move, feed, breed and thrive.

Before the first tree is planted, there's just one thing missing...

A name.

It’s . So many people living with dementia face barriers to accessing nature and greenspaces, even though we know that spending time outdoors can be therapeutic and enjoyable. Our wellbeing groups support people living with dementia and their carers to relax and have fun in beautiful woodland spaces. Everyone gets the opportunity to enjoy being outdoors and meet other people going through similar experiences 🌳⁠

One of group members summed it up with…"The main thing is, I always love it!" 💚⁠

Huge thanks to the volunteers who joined us earlier this month at the lovely Doncaster Road Park community orchard in Bristol!⁠
⁠
Planted in 2022, this orchard is a mix of heritage apples, pears and plum varieties 🍎🍐 It was great to see the trees getting on well, in spite of the very dry weather over the summer. ⁠
⁠
We spent the day weeding, doing summer pruning, mending tree guards and litter picking. It was great to look after this wonderful Bristol green space together 💚⁠

Did you know that trees are islands of safety and opportunity for our precious hazel dormouse 💚 Imagine you’re a dormouse at the edge of your woodland…an empty field is too dangerous and can’t be crossed, but if you can still move between trees, you’re safe!⁠
⁠
The loss of our woodlands and hedgerows is a major threat to the hazel dormouse. They rely on moving freely through tree habitats for food, shelter and finding mates. That’s one of the reasons we're planting trees that can connect woodlands around Bristol, Bath and Avon. These trees will become the wildlife corridors of the future, giving our much-loved bird, bat, mouse and other species a safe space in which to thrive 🌳

Through the summer, our dementia wellbeing groups have been meeting in woodlands to spend time together outside 🌞 We especially loved making our very own nature bunting. Why not give leaf printing a go yourself...⁠
⁠
🌳walk slowly through a green or woodland space and collect some leaves you like the look of⁠

🍂 paint one side of your leaf using a craft brush and paint, or a craft ink pad ⁠

🌿 push the side of the leaf you’ve painted or inked onto fabric or a piece of paper, and hold it down firmly for a few seconds ⁠

💚 see the leaf’s pattern become your very own piece of art ⁠

There are still a few spaces at our next orchard care day on Tuesday 1st September 🍎

Bristol’s community orchards provide green space and fruit for local people around the city. When our summer’s this hot, the growing trees need some help to stay healthy. Join us for a day outside taking care of them. We’ll be pruning, weeding and mulching to help them grow and stay hydrated.

Thank you to all the volunteers who came along to our orchard care day this week! We had a great day at Tormarton Crescent community orchard in Bristol, where we're helping the new fruit trees stay healthy through this hot summer 🍎

Together with our amazing volunteers, we laid a protective layer of mulch around each tree, helping them stay cooler and more hydrated. We also did some weeding and pruning to support growth.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s been taking care of Bristol’s community orchards with us. Together, we’ve been recognised by England's Community Forests as a Biodiversity Booster 🐝💚⁠

This is thanks to the 350 people from around Bristol who came along to orchard care days, as well as the 20 people who became orchard leaders for their local communities.⁠
⁠
Working with so many amazing volunteers, Bristol City Council and The Orchard Project, we've cared for 25 community orchards - and planted new spring bulbs and wildflowers meadows 🪻 ⁠
⁠
This is all great news for the communities who enjoy the green spaces and fruit each year, as well as the bees and other pollinators that rely on these habitats 🍎⁠
