Friends of the Avon New Cut (FrANC)

Friends of the Avon New Cut (commonly known as FrANC) was formed in 2006 when a group of local people got together in order to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the Avon New Cut including its history, geology and wildlife and its role in the development of Bristol’s Floating Harbour. FrANC now has a membership of over 100 who share a keen interest in helping both the natural environment of the Avon New Cut to thrive and its visitors and local people to enjoy this green corridor in the heart of Bristol.

Work to the New Cut bridges restoration programme is making good progress, with repairs to Bathurst Swing Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge on track to be completed by the end of 2026.

Councillor Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport and Connectivity Committee, said: “I'd like to thank residents, businesses and everyone who uses these routes for their patience and understanding while these essential works take place."

We've been busy counting New Cut wildlife - mainly birds - in 2025, finishing with a whopping 33 cormorants spotted roosting on the last day of December. The full survey is on our website:

This 2025 wildlife survey covers part of the Avon New Cut in Bristol from Bathurst Bridge to Ashton Avenue Bridge.
