At our main April meeting this week, we were visited by guest speakers and two dogs from The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association: Judith and Sheila attended with Freda (a Guide Dogs demonstration dog) and Owain (a Guide Dogs puppy in training). Sheila spoke about the journey of a puppy from breeding to training, successful matching and working as a guide dog for a blind person. Judith and Sheila’s accounts of successful matches were emotional and uplifting. Puppies that don’t go on to work as guide dogs are often used as support dogs including working with children, witness support in courts or as demonstration dogs like Freda. Judith and Freda gave an inspirational demonstration of some of the 37 behaviours the puppies are trained in. Jacky thanked Judith, Sheila, Freda and Owain. The members gave a hearty thumb-up. Afterwards, the members were able to chat with Judith and Sheila, and pat the dogs. The dogs were very photogenic and members took many, many photos. Some will be posted shortly.

The WI Learning Hub will shortly be 'going live' with its big new rebrand. From 9th February, it will now be known as 'Via'. Many of the lovely courses that we WI ladies have been enjoying up until now will in future be open to members of the public too, although non-WI members will need to pay a small fee to take part in each. Paid up WI members will continue to be able to take the majority of courses for free :-) If you are sitting at home looking out at the February rain and feeling a little glum, then now is the perfect time to join in with something interesting and entertaining online. Why not check out the courses on offer on the WI Learning Hub over the rest of this month

🚨Stargazers! Don't miss these dazzling sky events this month 👇🏻

🌕 January 3: Wolf Supermoon
The first Full Moon of 2026 is a massive Supermoon. It will appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a micro-moon as it reaches its closest point to Earth.
👀 When and where: Visible globally. Look for it rising in the East just after sunset.

🌍 January 3: Earth at Perihelion
On this day, Earth reaches its maximum speed and closest distance to the Sun for the entire year—about 3 million miles closer than in July.
👀 When and where: This is a geometric event, not visible to the eye. Occurs at 15:15 GMT, but the Sun will look virtually the same size.

🌠 January 3-4: Quadrantids Meteor Shower
Usually one of the year's best showers, producing up to 120 meteors per hour. However, this year the bright light of the Supermoon will wash out fainter meteors.
👀 When and where: Best visibility is in the Northern Hemisphere in the early morning hours of January 4. Look toward the constellation Boötes (near the Big Dipper).

🌌 January 10: Jupiter at Opposition
The King of Planets is at its biggest and brightest for the year! Earth is passing directly between the Sun and Jupiter, making the giant planet fully illuminated.
👀 When and where: Visible all night long. It rises in the East at sunset, climbs highest around midnight, and sets in the West at sunrise.

🌘 January 23: Moon Meets Saturn and Neptune
A beautiful celestial trio. The waxing crescent Moon hangs close to the ringed planet Saturn, with the distant ice giant Neptune hiding nearby.
👀 When and where: Look toward the Western horizon immediately after sunset. Saturn and the Moon are visible to the naked eye; you will need binoculars to spot Neptune.

✨ January 27: Moon Meets the Pleiades
The bright waxing gibbous Moon glides past the "Seven Sisters," the stunning open star cluster M45 in the constellation Ta**us.
👀 When and where: High in the Southern sky (Northern Hemisphere viewers) after nightfall. The bright cluster will be very close to the Moon's illuminated edge.

Happy skygazing!

Wow!

Wow!

Behold the breathtaking first sunrise of 2026 over Stonehenge. ⏳✨

It is incredibly rare to witness an alignment this perfect, where the atmospheric conditions and the angle of the winter sun combine to create a singular, vertical pillar of gold right through the center of the trilithons. 🏛️☀️

While the stones are famous for the Solstice, catching a beam of light this precise on New Year's Day is a phenomenon few ever get to see. A truly powerful start to the year! 🇬🇧🌿
