What can a garden in the middle of the city offer someone in recovery?

For World Mental Health Day, we’re looking back at Putting Down Roots, a project run by in Trinity’s Community Garden.

The weekly sessions brought people together to garden, learn new skills and spend time outdoors, using horticulture to support people in recovery and help build confidence, self-esteem and connections with others.

One participant, known as Miriam in Trinity’s archive, attended for around a year and a half. The team saw how gardening gave her space to unwind and feel better, and she later went on to work as a Forest School Assistant.

“It is a pleasure to work in such a beautiful space and to be part of something so positive that so well serves the local community.”

As we look back over 50 years of Trinity, stories like this remind us that our history isn’t only what’s happened on our stages. It’s also about the different ways people have used this building and what those spaces have made possible.

Your Trinity: Past.

What becomes possible when Black artists and communities have space to gather, experiment and be heard?

For Black History Month, and as we mark 50 years of Trinity, we’re looking back at the people, music and cultural movements that have helped shape Trinity, and asking what that history means for the spaces we create today.
