BLACK BRISTOLIAN HISTORY: The Bristol Bus boycott

The Bus Boycotts happened in Bristol in 1963. The Bristol Omnibus company had said multiple times that they would not be employing Black or Brown bus drivers. This led to members of our community organizing protests and Boycotts (not going on buses) for several months in response to this. After months of Boycotts, Bristol Omnibus finally agreed to employ bus drivers from Black and Brown backgrounds. In September 1963, the first non-white bus driver was employed by Bristol Omnibus Company.
The Boycotts influenced the 1965 and 1968 race and equalities act, which made it illegal to discriminate people based on their race at work. Without our community taking a stand, this act may not have existed.

We’re really excited to be partnering with the National Trust and Somerset Bodgers on a brand-new creative project at the beautiful and historic Tyntesfield House! 🪵🎨🌳

Across 5 free sessions, starting NEXT THURSDAY, you’ll have the chance to:

There’ll be a one-week break on Thursday 29 October for half term.

🚌 FREE TRANSPORT AVAILABLE!

OTR & All Aboard are back this Autumn for a FREE five-week creative journey in Paddle Making — perfect for kayaking, canoeing or SUP! (Starting 20th Oct) This course takes place in a real working boatyard in Bristol Harbour, where you’ll be guided by a skilled boat builder/carpenter.

You’ll learn traditional woodworking techniques, discover how to shape and finish your paddle from the type of wood you’ve chosen, and explore how design affects performance on the water. Alongside the making process, you’ll also get out on the river for a paddle session and plastic clean-up, combining fun, teamwork, and care for the environment.

This course is for 18-25 year old men and male identifying including non-binary young people who love being hands-on, enjoy nature, or are curious about craftsmanship, the environment, or marine culture.

No experience needed — just bring your creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to get stuck in!

Who are Freedom? 🌈

Freedom is OTR's gender and sexuality social action project for young people aged 13-25.

It's open to anyone questioning their sexuality or gender, and is supported by a team of friendly and knowledgeable LGBTQ+ youth workers.

Group sessions are social, informative and safe supportive spaces. Workshops centre on topics such as housing, relationships, mental health, gender and sexuality, keeping safe and much more.

Members decide the programme, which always includes games, socials, trips and creative activities.

Get to know Project Zazi ⚡️

'Know yourself, know your strength' 💚

Project Zazi is the name for our work with young black people and young people of colour, supporting them in exploring culture and identity and tackling issues of inequality and oppression.

The project offers a mix of one-to-one support and different kinds of group work. In all these spaces, we aim to provide safe and brave atmospheres where you can explore your identity and culture, try new activities and learn new skills.

The aim is to promote good physical and mental health, healthy relationships and positive lifestyles.
