Last month a commemorative plaque was unveiled in Bristol, in honour of pioneering ophthalmologist and Sight Research UK founder, Professor David Easty (1933-2022).

A leading figure in eye research, Professor Easty founded our charity in 1986, originally known as the National Eye Research Centre (NERC), with a vision to advance research into the causes and treatment of sight loss.

Four decades later, his legacy continues to inspire our work as we fund pioneering research and strive towards a future where everyone can see.

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary this year, it's especially meaningful to see his remarkable contribution to eye health recognised with this lasting tribute.

A wonderful reminder of where our journey began, and the vision that continues to guide us today. 💙

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our colleagues, we're proud to share that our recent charity raffle raised an amazing £1,180 for Sight Research UK 👏

Sight Research UK funds pioneering research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of eye diseases, helping to bring new sight-saving discoveries closer to the people who need them most.

Their work supports research into conditions including glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and inherited retinal diseases, with the aim of improving treatments and creating a future where fewer people experience sight loss.

🔬 Applications are now open for our Translational Research Award.

Funding is available to help promising research move closer towards real-world impact for people affected by sight loss.

Researchers can apply for:

🔹TRLs 3-4: up to £150,000 to support promising concepts with proof-of-concept preliminary data and help progress research towards TRLs 5-7.

🔹TRLs 5-7: up to £250,000 to support the development of new therapies, devices and diagnostics.

📅 Applications close 29 October 2026.

Sight loss is a growing challenge. But research has the power to change what the future looks like.

By 2030, 3.5 million people could be living with sight loss in the UK. Yet estimates suggest just 1.5% of UK medical research investment supported eye research.

Research can help us find new and better ways to detect, diagnose, treat and prevent eye disease - protecting sight and changing lives.

At Sight Research UK, we’re committed to making that research possible. Between 2019/20 and 2025/26, we committed £2.4 million to 48 research grants.

But there is so much more still to discover.

Reminder for eye researchers 🔬

Applications are open for our Translational Research Award, with funding available across TRLs 3-7.

Introduced as part of our new Research Strategy, new TRL 3–4 funding opportunity is designed to support promising research at an earlier stage and help bridge the gap between scientific discovery and potential patient benefit.

Researchers at TRLs 3-4 can apply for up to £150,000 supporting concepts with proof-of-concept preliminary data to progress towards TRL 5-7.

Funding also continues for research at TRLs 5-7, with awards of up to £250,000 available.

The goal is to accelerate the development of promising new therapies, devices and diagnostics that could ultimately benefit people living with sight loss.
