From sudden sight loss to BBC’s Race Across the World 💙

After losing sight in both eyes due to a rare form of uveitis, Tricia became so frightened of the world around her that she didn’t leave her home for a whole year.

Today, many people know her as one of the winners of BBC’s Race Across the World Series 3, where she travelled across Canada with her best friend Cathie.

Tricia’s story highlights the importance of support, determination, and crucially, research. Sight-saving treatments and participation in a clinical trial helped to stabilise her vision and prolong her sight.

“If it wasn’t for that research, I wouldn’t have my eyesight because it would have deteriorated completely.”

Tricia now encourages others to get involved in research wherever possible, believing it can help improve treatments and awareness for people living with sight conditions.

Did you know that cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure carried out by the NHS?

Around 1,200 cataract operations take place every day in the UK, yet more than 3.5 million people are living with sight loss caused by cataracts.

Throughout June, we’ll be sharing facts, research and stories to help raise awareness of cataracts and their impact on everyday life.

If you’d like to learn more about cataracts, including symptoms, causes and treatment options, visit:

After being diagnosed with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Heather began making lifestyle changes to help manage her condition and protect her sight. From adapting to blurred vision to researching nutrition and eye health, she’s determined to stay positive and proactive.

Heather believes research has a vital role to play in helping people maintain their independence and quality of life as they age 💙

“I am grateful for proper research into anything worthy of preventing challenges in health.”

Stories like Heather’s remind us why pioneering sight research matters.

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Bristol Eye Bank NHS Organ Donation for their continued support of Sight Research UK. 💚

As part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, the team held a bake sale fundraiser and raised an amazing £165 towards pioneering eye research.

It was wonderful to visit the team in person to thank them and celebrate the long-standing connection between Bristol Eye Bank and Sight Research UK, both founded by Professor David Easty in 1986.

Every fundraiser, conversation and act of support helps move eye research forward for people living with sight loss.

Thank you to everyone involved! 🍰
