Temwa Partnering with remote communities in Malawi to end poverty & transform lives.

Temwa works in Malawi and aims to empower the people of Nkhata Bay North, one of the most disadvantaged and inaccessible regions of Malawi. These communities are isolated from Africa’s progress, but we believe this can change. Temwa works with the community so they can support themselves and their families and achieve a better quality of life. Working to empower and educate Malawian farmers, famil

ies affected by HIV & AIDS, orphans and vulnerable children, Temwa delivers education and resources to communities in order to help them learn sustainable farming and vocational skills, protect theirs and their children’s health, and build strong and sustainable communities. Our vision is that the communities of Nkhata Bay North will become a thriving and successful asset to Malawi; but Temwa needs support from individual donors, volunteers, and corporate partners to achieve their vision for this African community. 🌱 Farmer Field School – Supporting Young Farmers

At just 23, Jacob Chunda is already seeing what’s possible when young farmers are equipped with the right skills and support.

After taking part in the Chikoko Farmer Field School, Jacob learned how to produce and use Biochar - an organic soil enhancer that improves soil health and boosts crop yields. Inspired by the results on a shared demonstration plot, he brought these techniques back to his own quarter-acre tomato farm.

Today, his plants are thriving and already producing fruit, with an expected harvest of 12 basins 🍅

Jacob plans to reinvest his earnings to grow his farm while supporting his household - showing how sustainable agriculture can build both livelihoods and opportunity.

His story is a powerful reminder that with knowledge, innovation and determination, futures can be transformed - for individuals, families and entire communities.

We’re still buzzing from Future Forward ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Wednesday - it was an incredible day filled with energy, connection and inspiration. From bold ideas to hopeful discussions about what’s possible, we’ve no doubt that what started in the room will turn into meaningful action and exciting outcomes.

Rob Hopkins took us on a powerful journey into the future - one shaped by our hopes, imagination and collective ambition. It left us feeling inspired, energised, and reminded that a better future isn’t just possible - it’s something we can create together 🌍

To quote Rob himself: “What if… the rapid transition away from fossil fuels, away from industrial meat production, prolific jet-setting and economic inequality with the making of us? What if…. Right now became the most thrilling time to be alive? It is entirely possible that, in the future, we will look back on this time and think what an incredible time it was to be alive. We had the tremendous, good fortune to experience it! So much changed, so fast. Wouldn’t that be something?”

A special thank you to our brilliant sponsors Mocean, Belmont Estate and Spike Island for making the day possible 💚

🌍 The climate crisis is not a future threat. It is a daily reality in Malawi.

Malawi is now among the top three countries most vulnerable to climate change. The rains that communities once depended on are no longer reliable. Seasons shift. Droughts last longer. Floods arrive without warning. For smallholder farmers, this instability threatens everything. Food. Income. Dignity. Survival.

🌱 Solar irrigation is no longer a luxury. It is a lifeline.

Through The Big Give: Earth Raise, Temwa is raising vital funds to expand solar‑powered irrigation for rural farming communities. This support helps families adapt, rebuild, and thrive even as the climate continues to change.

Thanks to solar irrigation, farmers are no longer trapped by a short and erratic rainy season. Crops can grow all year round, including through the dry months. Heavy, exhausting watering with tins and cans has been replaced by clean, renewable solar pumps and water storage. Time is restored. Energy returns. Hope grows.

At Chanjati Irrigation Group, the impact has been transformational. After receiving water pumps in 2024 and a water tank in 2025, farmers began growing crops such as cabbages and onions for both food and income. Families are eating better, earning more, and investing in small businesses to secure their futures. Village Headmen are actively involved, spreading the word about solar irrigation and strengthening resilience across their communities.

🌞 Solar irrigation means:

Reliable farming in the face of climate uncertainty

Improved food security and nutrition

Increased incomes and new livelihood opportunities

Stronger, more resilient rural communities

In just one week’s time, the Big Give’s Earth Raise 7-day online match funding campaign will be launched – Temwa is one of many charities seeking to raise funds to address a wide range of environmental challenges.

Temwa’s focus is on improving Malawian farmers’ access to solar irrigation equipment. We know the enormous impact this can have based on our previous experience. For example, Sara Banda and her family in Selemani Village struggled with hunger for years. Erratic rainfall and prolonged droughts reduced Sara’s crop yields, and relying on manual watering limited what she could grow. As for many smallholder farmers, climate change was threatening her family’s future.

Temwa provided Sara with a solar pump for use both on a group field and her individual plot. Soon, Sara was able to access water regularly and grow a range of nutritious crops to feed her family all year round, including potatoes, onions, green pepper and carrots. Some of the income from sales of these crops has been re-invested by Sara’s group into an additional solar pump. Sara’s journey shows what’s possible when communities have access to clean energy and climate resilient solutions.

If you donate to Temwa through Earth Raise between April 22nd and April 29th, your donation will be doubled, and Temwa can support more families access solar irrigation equipment to build their resilience in the face of climate change.

Double your impact with the Big Give: Earth Raise! 🌍

Temwa is raising funds through the Earth Raise Campaign to support farmers adopt solar irrigation. A single investment can support several harvests each year, year after year. It helps families feed themselves, earn a living and cope better with climate change.

Solar irrigation turns sunlight into opportunity, dignity, and hope for Malawi’s farmers.

Donate between April 22nd – 29th to have your donation doubled by the Big Give!
