The debate about food security in the UK is starting to gather momentum, but it has been a long-standing conversation amongst the communities we work with in northern Malawi.
In Nkhata Bay North, communities are already experiencing the impacts of climate change through unpredictable rainfall, declining soil fertility and increasing pressure on already limited natural resources. Food security is not a future risk. It is a daily reality.
That is why Temwa's Sustainable Agriculture Programme focuses on many of the same solutions now being advocated for the UK:
-Supporting farmers to grow diverse, nutritious crops locally
- Promoting agroforestry and tree planting to improve soil health, reduce erosion and improve biodiversity
- Building climate-resilient farming systems that reduce vulnerability to external shocks
-Encouraging sustainable land and water management
-Improving access to nutritious food while protecting the natural environment that makes farming possible
As the UK considers how to build a more resilient food system, there is much we can learn from the communities Temwa works with in northern Malawi that are already adapting to food insecurity challenges every day.
