Science Cafe - Tuesday September 8th.

Our speaker is Alan Winfield, Professor of Robot Ethics at the department of Engineering, Design and Mathematics at the University of the West of England.

From ancient automata to present day concerns about robot malfunctions and ethics, Alan will present a fascinating look at how robots have developed, and are continuing to develop.

How our bodies cope with constant damage—and still manage to repair and thrive.
Our speaker this month is:
Dr Helen Weavers (University of Bristol).
Everyday life exposes our tissues to stress, from injury and inflammation to the byproducts of normal metabolism. Yet most of the time, repair happens efficiently and without us noticing. How do cells and tissues achieve this resilience?
Using cutting-edge imaging, genetics, and studies ranging from fruit flies to human populations, Helen will reveal the hidden defence and repair systems that protect our bodies. Her work connects what happens inside individual cells to the health of whole tissues, with implications for wound healing, ageing, and disease.

Science Cafe on Tuesday May 5th.
Our speaker this month is:
Dr Kevin Wilkinson, University of Bristol.

Our brains are made up of billions of neurons that communicate through tiny junctions called synapses. These connections are not fixed: they strengthen, weaken, and reorganise as we learn and form memories.

In this talk, Kevin will describe how synapses transmit information, how we can observe them changing during learning, and what happens when these processes go wrong.
Disruptions in synaptic communication are thought to play a key role in conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and understanding them may help us develop better treatments.
