🌧️💧☔️Hurrah!!! Rain!!! A lot of rain!!! Finally… 👏🏽🙌🏻🥳

As well as all our plants getting a good soak with rainwater (which is much better than tap water as it’s free of harsh chemicals and contains natural nutrients) the team is very much enjoying the cooler temperatures. It’s so refreshing after such a long hot summer! *insert rain dance here* 🕺🏻💧

😍 Our flowers also look stunning covered with all those pretty raindrops. After a slow start to the year, our dahlias are really in their element now 👌🏻🌺

☀️💐This afternoon we had 4 lovely humans down from Vassall Community Hub to pick their own flower bouquets!

Our team did a wonderful job of giving them a tour round our allotment site, explaining what we get up to and assisting them as they picked and arranged their flowers. Aren’t they stunning! 😍

We love having guests on site, seeing the joy it brings to people’s faces as well as our team shine as they share what they love 💫.

Let us know if you’d like to visit for a pick your own, we still have lots of flowers in bloom. Suggested donation of £15/bouquet 🌹🌻🌸🌼🌺

Despite this year’s extreme heat waves and droughts, we’ve still managed to grow and harvest a stunning range of fruits, herbs & veggies! Go team 💫

We’ve been enjoying lots of 🍅cherry tomatoes (red, yellow & orange), 🥒cucumbers, fennel, 🌶️chillies, 🫑padron peppers, basil, parsley (flat & curly leaf), patty pan squash, courgettes, rainbow chard, 🥦purple sprouting broccoli, 🌽sweetcorn, runner beans, french beans, 🧄elephant garlic, 🧅onions, 🫜beetroot…and more!

We nibble as much as we can on our break and lunch, the team are then welcome to take produce home to enjoy. Any surplus we have we give away to the local community for free at The Vassal Centre Bristol Charities 💜

This week we congratulated one of our team members for their 1 year anniversary at Creative Opportunities! 👏🏼 (and had a lot of fun playing with our first sweetcorn 🌽🙈)

🏂 Fun fact about me? ‘I used to be a snowboarder!’
👍🏼 Highlight of the year? ‘Taking on the new plot, getting it cleared and growing things in it.’
👎🏼 Lowlight of the year? ‘Hurting my ankle recently (not at work!) which has made things complicated…’
🤔 What does Creative Opportunities mean to me? ‘It’s very freeing. To be at one with nature and getting to know people you wouldn’t normally know.’

Colston brings so much energy and joy to the team it’s been a delight to have him on board - we can also confirm that he’s the master of singing while working!! 🎤

Our Zinnias (Benary’s & Queen lime series) are blooming!! 😍🌸 So here’s an appreciation post…

🌈 Zinnias are bold, colourful annual flowers (in almost every colour of the rainbow including greens, but they lack the genetic ability to produce true blue petals). They make great cut and come again flowers 💐

🇲🇽 Native to Mexico, they thrive in the heat! We plant them in our polytunnel every year

👀 Ancient Aztecs called them ‘mal de ojos’, plants that are hard on the eyes

🦋 Zinnias are incredibly rich in nectar, so an excellent magnet for attracting pollinators such as butterflies and bees

👾 In 2016, a zinnia became the first ever flower to bloom in space aboard the International Space Station!!

Which is your favourite?

🪏Today whilst turning our compost a few of the team played a game of ‘What am I?’ - garden inspired! 🤔❓Can you guess the answers?! Let us know in the comments 💬

Other fun moments we’ve had recently…Corinna’s birthday celebrations 🎂, a shout out to basil brush, sowing seeds in zag zags…who says we need straight lines? and lunchtime quizzes 😁

We are a Fishponds (Bristol) based charity providing supported training & employment for disabled people!

Using the creativity of gardening, cooking & crafts (especially in the winter months!), we provide continued, paid, sustainable & rewarding employment. These opportunities are incredibly meaningful for people with disabilities, who are often disadvantaged when searching for work.

Our intimate team of 10 (including 1 volunteer) work incredibly hard all year round 3 days/week, and we have a glorioussss time in the process 😜 ☕️ ☀️

Got any questions for us? Want to find out more? Send us a DM and say hi 😊

Spring glorious Spring! 🌼🌱🌸🐰

The team have been busy bees over the last few months, preparing for the upcoming growing season.

2/3. Charles Dowding’s yeast slug traps 💫
4. Crocuses giving us life in early Spring 🌷
5. Tomatoes!! Already bursting from their pots, perhaps we were a bit premature with these but we couldn’t stop ourselves… 🍅
6. Painting our sheds & seating areas - bring on sage green! 💚
7. Zinnias popping up nicely in the warm sunshine of our office windowsills ☀️
8. A mouse nest discovered in one of our compost bays 🐭
