Sara’s story is a reminder of the lifelong effects of FGM and why it must be recognised and treated as child abuse. Although it can be labelled as a cultural practice, it is not. FGM is carried out on children without them understanding what is happening to them or the consequences later on in life.

Survivors’ stories like Sara’s highlight the importance of giving young people access to education about their rights, autonomy and harmful practices. Our young people talk about how they want more open conversations and information about their rights. This is important, as education can play a key role in prevention. By giving young people knowledge, access to help and the confidence to speak up, they can also drive change in their own communities.

The fact that Sara’s mother later apologised does not change the harm that was caused, but it does show that open conversations can create change. Ending FGM is going to require community engagement and lots of open conversations.
