A 30 year old Asylum seeker from Sudan - On many occasions the has criticised for their lack of impartiality but in recent times these newspapers seem more alike than ever as seen in their response to Belfast’s anti immigration riots. After a stabbing that was captured on video, violence erupted on Tuesday night across Belfast as they were urged to take to the streets by , Tommy Robinson and others. Recently anti immigration rhetoric has been pushed by influencers, the news and MP’s, so our question is why has a supposedly left wing newspaper like The Guardian chosen to reduce the attacker to his immigration status and ethnicity. This shifts the attention away from individual criminal behaviour and onto entire groups and communities as it further fuels racism and stigma. The Guardian’s competitor, whom they are highly critical of, BBC news have also highlighted the attackers ethnicity and immigration status and it is concerning when news channels use intense situations to push their agendas. It creates a double standard as white British offenders’ ethnicities aren’t mentioned and it distracts us from the larger issues, failures in early mental health intervention, policing and safeguarding.
