Men in Sheds is a support group for older men (or women) broadly over 50’s who want to get together, share and learn new skills - all in the welcoming space of a ‘Shed’. The ‘Shed’ (a workshop), has a selection of hand and power tools, and equipment available for the exclusive use of members housed in as safe an en
vironment as is possible, where members can work on individual and group projects or perhaps just socialise, but where the day-to-day management of the Shed is up to each Shed member, with ‘Shedders’ deciding on activities they want to follow. This gives control and ownership to the Shed members.
‘Men in Sheds’ is like a larger version of a typical shed in the garden – a place where you can feel at home and pursue your own practical interests but where members share skills, tools and the resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly venue with tea, coffee and biscuits on tap. Activities usually involve working in wood but may include activities as varied as bike repair to model engineering, to toy making and wood carving. There are now a large and growing number of Sheds in the UK where all members are welcome. Meetings of ‘Filton Men in Sheds’ are held weekly at the Scout Hut, Nutfield Grove, Filton on Wednesday’s from 9.30 am till 12.30 pm (Established 2nd September 2015).
