We provide safe houses and support in the community for survivors of modern slavery. We also run the Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline and work with individuals, communities, businesses, governments, other charities and statutory agencies to stamp out slavery for good. We're delighted to be joining Bath Abbey for this year's Anti-Slavery Day.

Join us at 9.30am and 11.30am on Sunday 18 October for readings, hymns and a Q&A with Unseen CEO, Renae Mann.

Here is a story from our women's safe house:

Earlier this year, a resident joined Unseen’s women’s safe house. She was very anxious, spoke little English, and had little confidence going anywhere alone. Generally, she was feeling very low.

Her caseworker was determined to raise her mood and encourage confidence and independence. After hearing the resident loved working with animals, the caseworker connected her with Windmill City Farm and helped her access free English lessons.

Here is what the resident said:
“In the last few months, I’ve been feeling much better mentally. And going forward I’ve realised I’m sure I can have a normal life. Here I have been respected as a human being … And it makes me feel like I know I am going to be ok within the community and have a good life ahead of me.”

The business services team draws on the wider organisation's frontline insights and experience, applying these across services including risk assessments, training, and escalation and remediation support.

The guidance and services are survivor-centred and informed, practical, with a strong focus on collaboration and continuous improvement.

"By seeing it and choosing to do nothing about it, we just perpetuate the demand and supply of vulnerable people"

These are words from our founder Andrew Wallis who appeared earlier this year on episode six of AML Intelligence's podcast, 'Collared', discussing the realities of modern slavery and human trafficking.

Modern slavery is not only real, but effects approximately 50 million people worldwide and 130,000 people in the UK alone. This rampant crime is happening in plain sight and affects all of us. From the clothes we wear, to the food we eat, modern slavery is present in every town, city, and sector.

Currently, the UK is enabling a ‘low risk, high reward’ environment for traffickers and exploiters. This perpetuation of exploitation is a reality that we should not accept. Learn more about how Unseen is working towards a world without slavery.

Unseen's new report shows that modern slavery cases in UK retail have doubled in a year.

Our latest report, Behind the counter: modern slavery in retail reveals a worrying rise in modern slavery and exploitation cases identified within the UK retail sector.

Drawing on data from the UK Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline, the report highlights emerging trends, the changing nature of exploitation, and why retailers, policymakers and consumers all have a role to play in tackling this growing issue.

Modern slavery can be hidden in plain sight, from labour exploitation in supply chains to the exploitation of vulnerable individuals in retail environments. Understanding the scale and nature of the problem is the first step towards preventing it.
