As we celebrate Black History Month, we want to recognise a particular programme driving change and challenging inequity for Black women.
Black women continue to face disproportionate barriers and poorer outcomes within health and maternity care and devastatingly, Black women are over twice as likely to die during pregnancy or in the postnatal period than white women.
The Black Maternity Matters Collaboration was launched in 2021 for perinatal staff within the West of England, focusing on targeted anti-racism education, theory and practice, peer support, community and quality improvement transformation projects through an anti-Blackness lens.
Our CEO reflects on her experience of being part of the Black Maternity Matters programme this year, An initiative which empowers leaders to address the unacceptable inequalities experienced by Black mothers at a systems level.
"Being a part of the Black Maternity Matters Leadership Programme has been transformative, both professionally and personally. It has strengthened my understanding of anti-racist practice, and reinforced the importance of driving meaningful systems change to tackle the inequitable maternity outcomes faced by Black mothers." - Kyra Bond, CEO
