After a summer filled with Playscheme fun, school sessions have started up again 😀

We have welcomed students onto the Downs, with recent sessions focusing on Autumn art 🍂🌰 They have created some incredible artwork, you may have spotted some of them on your walk.

It is always amazing seeing students out in nature, learning, exploring and having fun!

Let's kick-off these school holidays by having fun in nature! 🍁🍄

On Monday the 26th we will be running an exciting session, 'Autumn Antics'. Discover how animals prepare for winter through fun activities, arts & crafts! 🎨🖌

🏞️Our fabulous story-walker and author, Clare Reddaway, has created a brand new heritage session especially for us in a completely new part of Clifton Down! 🚶‍➡️🚶‍♂️‍➡️
🚶In this new session we explore the iconic tree-lined Promenade to find a s***f mill & an iron age fort, a masterpiece of Victorian engineering 🌉& a hermit's cave. We'll wonder at the flickering images of early photography📸 & marvel at some mighty mansions💒. We might even encounter the odd runaway monkey as we go!🐒

To protect wildlife, we must first know what's there and how it's doing🌿🐭🦋

That's where field surveys come in! To name just a few, we support the long-running dormouse surveys in Leigh Woods, monthly bird monitoring on the Downs and in the Gully, invertebrate surveys on the Dumps, and new plant surveys recording the abundance and locations of rare species in the Avon Gorge.

There’s plenty more to discover, and we’ll be sharing updates as the surveys continue!

Exciting news for the threatened species of the Avon Gorge and Downs in Bristol!🎉💚

In July 2026 a grant agreement between Natural England and Bristol Zoological Society entitled ‘Living Limestones of Bristol’s Avon Gorge’ project was signed, under the Threatened Species Recovery Action programme.

Working in partnership with Bristol City Council, the National Trust and UoB Botanic Garden, this project will help safeguard nine UK red list threatened species on the Downs and in the Avon Gorge. They include invertebrates such as the silky wave moth, and botanical species such as the Bristol onion, Bristol rock-cress and many more!

We are also working in collaboration with Somerset Wildlife Trust to help the threatened autumn lady’s-tresses.

Together, we are helping to ensure Bristol's unique wildlife and plants not only survive, but thrive 🌿🦋

From fairs 🎪 to festivals 🎶, we have attended some amazing events recently, delivering fun and informative activities to families, friends, and students.

Key events included the Festival of Nature, Forwards Festival, and Student Welcome Fair.

🌞🐦🐝The sun shone, birds sang, bees buzzed & our stunning trees blossomed🌸
👫Thank you to Friends of the Downs & Avon Gorge for sharing this event with us - we just love our annual session together👬👭

❓Did you know that we survey the dormouse population in Forestry England's beautiful Leigh Woods.
🪾Leigh Woods is a fabulous National Nature Reserve & part of the Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife SSSI/SAC🦡🦔🦋
🪲🪳🦟As an ancient woodland with all the fabulous habitat features associated, this gorgeous creature thrives here🌳🪵
🌿Dormice are arboreal & spend their time in the trees except while hibernating during the winter months🍂
🍃At this time of year, some dormice have woken up from hibernation & moved up into the summer nest boxes, where they continue sleeping for a little longer🎋
👀We begin surveying the boxes in April & any dormice located are carefully sexed, weighed & checked before being replaced until they wake properly from torpor
📅Surveys of the nest boxes will continue every month until autumn, to monitor the health of the population🙋‍♀️
