Help during Mental Health Awareness Week

James works in a BT call centre and is married with 2 children. He suffers with PTSD following time spent in the military and also suffers with anxiety and depression. He took some time off to focus on his mental health but fell into rent arrears which he was struggling to pay. James and his wife were already struggling with childcare costs and general living costs, so the rent arrears were adding even more pressure whilst taking a toll on James’s mental health. James contacted the BT Benevolent Fund via BT’s Employee Assistance Programme and we were able to clear the rent arrears and award a small grant towards living costs. This was a huge relief to James who is now thriving back at work.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week and the Mental Health Foundation reminds us that “Even small actions can help us feel hopeful and less powerless. And while our individual actions matter, when we come together we are even more powerful.”

We can only help people like James because of the generosity of our donors, so huge thanks to everyone that contributes to the BT Benevolent Fund.

In the first quarter of 2026 the BT Benevolent Fund dealt with 85 one-off requests for help, as well as continuing to pay weekly grants to 105 BT pensioners on very low incomes. Forty-five of our cases came from current BT employees and in all we awarded grants of over £200,000.

We can only help those in need because of the generosity of our donors, so huge thanks to everyone that contributes to the Fund.

A helping hand for Laura and Kaleb

Laura and Kaleb are married with 3 children. Laura works in an EE call centre and they were managing quite well until Kaleb lost his job. The loss of Kaleb’s job meant that they were struggling to buy food and other household essentials. Their mortgage interest rate had increased significantly a couple of years ago and was taking up most of their income and high energy bills were also adding pressure to the family. We awarded Laura and Kaleb a grant to help with the increased living costs and to provide some financial respite until Kaleb found a new job, which I’m pleased to report he now has.

We can only help people like Laura and Kaleb because of the generosity of our donors, so huge thanks to everyone that contributes to the BT Benevolent Fund.

Huge thanks to the CSiS Charity Fund for their kind donation of £20K for which we are extremely grateful. They are fantastic supporters of the BT Benevolent Fund and their generosity means that we can help even more BT people who are suffering financial hardship.

The CSIS Charity Fund is an independent charity which works with partner organisations to help civil and public servants and their families get through tough periods in their lives and we are privileged to receive their support. www.csischarityfund.org
