A sea of running shoes on Newcastle streets, 👟
Where hope and the pavement finally meet.

The Great North Run is a grueling race,
But Emma is running with purpose and grace.

For children in wards, looking out for some fun,
Radio Lollipop shows how it is done.

With music and games and a reason to smile,
They soften the struggle of every long mile.

Emma runs for her colleague, for Kate and the cause,
For moments of joy that give sickness a pause.

For comfort and play that the volunteers bring,
To give every child a fab place to sing.

So cheer for each stride as she pushes ahead,
By passion and kindness and charity led.

Your support keeps hospital worries far away,
By filling up their wards with Lollipop fun and play.

Every penny helps their vital mission grow,
To give brave kids a bright and cheerful Radio Lollipop show.

🎉 A fantastic new addition for the children and families supported by Radio Lollipop Southampton! 🎉

This week Radio Lollipop Southampton has officially launched its brand-new LolliTrollie – a specially designed mobile entertainment and sensory unit that will help bring smiles, comfort and fun to children receiving treatment at Southampton Children’s Hospital.

Costing £12,000 and made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of supporters, the LolliTrollie is packed with bubbles, disco lights, fibre optics, music, karaoke, games and sensory equipment. It allows volunteers to take play and entertainment directly to the bedside, helping children of all ages and abilities, including those with sensory needs.

For more than 32 years, the amazing volunteers at Radio Lollipop Southampton have been supporting children and families during some of their toughest moments. This latest addition will help create positive distractions, reduce anxiety and bring moments of joy to around 2,500 children every year.

A huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. Here’s to many more smiles, laughter and unforgettable moments for the children and families who need them most. ❤️🎈

🥳Happy Birthday to Radio Lollipop!🥳

The first ever broadcast took place at Queen Mary's Hospital, Carshalton, UK on 5th May 1979 at 12noon. Since then we have gone on to open more than 30 Radio Lollipops in 5 countries.

Thank you to all the Radio Lollipop Volunteers around the world who continue to provide our unique service of care, comfort, play and entertainment for children and young people in hospital.

A weekend of SERIOUS FUN at the UK conference in London.

Volunteers from around the UK stations met up for a weekend packed full of training, learning opportunities, networking and of course fun!

New friendships were made. Old friendships rekindled. Unknown crafts and dancing skills were uncovered! 😉😂

📢Huge Congratulations to Radio Lollipop UK Newcastle who have received The King’s Award for Voluntary Service 🎖

Radio Lollipop Newcastle, a group of volunteers based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2025.

This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.
Radio Lollipop Newcastle provides care, comfort, play and entertainment to children and their families in the Great North Children’s Hospital. By providing music, stories, games and crafts, they bring joy at the most difficult points in families lives.

Radio Lollipop Newcastle reduce children’s pain, anxiety and boredom by providing moments of creativity, laughter and entertainment, which are essential to their development.

Radio Lollipop Newcastle is one of 231 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. Their work, along with others from across the UK, reminds us of all the ways fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Her Late Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee and was continued following the accession of His Majesty The King. 2025 marks the third year of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Recipients are announced annually on 14th November, The King’s Birthday. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse and include volunteer groups from across the UK.

Representatives of Radio Lollipop Newcastle will receive the award crystal and certificate from Ms. Lucy Winskell, Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear in the coming months. In addition, two volunteers from Radio Lollipop Newcastle will attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May and June 2026, along with other recipients of this year’s award.

Chairperson Lydia Nicholson-Allen-Jones said: “We are overjoyed that Radio Lollipop Newcastle have received this prestigious award. Our team are all volunteers, and I am so proud to be a part of it. We are rewarded every time we help a child to have a better day, but this award is recognition of the hard work put in by our volunteers, past and present. I am excited to see what our future holds.”
