Stand Against Racism & Inequality

Stand Against Racism & Inequality We offer free and confidential support to victims of hate crime in Avon & Somerset Our victim casework service is completely free and confidential.

Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI) is a Bristol-based hate crime charity. We have operated throughout the South West since 1991, helping victims of hate crime and discrimination. SARI employs a total of around 25 staff; our single largest activity is casework. In design, this service primarily supports victims of hate crime, providing them with the emotional and practical support they often

require. We also work with children, young people and schools, providing support to pupils facing racist, disablist, homophobic or transphobic hate in and around school. Additionally, we deliver training on hate crime, aiming to encourage positive behaviour and promote equality amongst all through fun and informative sessions. We are a non-profit making, non-political and non-campaigning organisation. For more information, please visit our website at www.saricharity.org.uk

From everyone at SARI, we wish you a Happy Pride Month.

Pride started as a rebellion, a rising up in defense of love. It is a chance for people to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, to stand in solidarity, and call for equality, respect and acceptance.

So much has been achieved over the past decades. However, hate crimes targeting the LGBTQ+ community continue to be an issue, alongside an increasingly toxic narrative around transgender people.

Here's to living in a world where people are free to love one another, and be the person they are, without fear of hate.

There should be no space for anti-LGBTQ+ hate in our communities. If you experience anti-LGBTQ+ hate, SARI are here for you.

Today is White Armband Day, a day of remembrance which marks the issuing of an order that all non-Serbian citizens in Prijedor put a white ribbon on their houses and, if they left their houses, to wear a white armband. In the following years, approximately 3176 people were murdered in Prijedor; the majority were Bosniak (Bosnian Muslims), whilst Croats were also targeted. Serbians who protested against the atrocities were also murdered.

These killings were part of a wider genocide in Bosnia. Between 1992 and 1995, around 100,000 people were killed, 2 million were displaced, and between 20,000-50,000 women were systematically r***d. The majority of those who were killed were Bosniak.

Genocide is the worst form of hate, one which completely dehumanises the people targeted in its aim to destroy the group they belong to. Today we remember all those murdered in the Bosnian genocide, and those murdered in previous and subsequent genocides. We must stand against hate when we witness it, and stand for humanity and compassion.

Today marks six years since the tragic death of George Floyd Jr., who lost his life to police brutality on 25th May 2020. His death sparked a global outpouring of grief and highlighted the urgent need to address police brutality and institutional racism.

We dedicate this post to all people from racially minoritised backgrounds who have died in police custody here in the UK and across the globe.
Racism and hate crime are not only problems in the US.

They are a serious issue in our own communities and institutions and we must educate ourselves to understand the scale of the issue.

We must challenge the views of those who still don’t believe it exists.

Together, we can make a difference by proactively standing against racism and inequality in our everyday lives.

If you have been impacted by injustice and inequality, please reach out to us - we are here for you.

The EHRC draft Code of Practice on services, public functions and associations was laid in Parliament yesterday. We understand this will be having a huge impact on trans, non-binary, and intersex people, and we send our solidarity to all those feeling the ramifications today.

The Bristol LGBTQ+ Coalition, which we are a part of, have drafted this statement:

We will be taking time to understand the draft guidance, as well as seek out any necessary legal advice.

We encourage you to contact your local MP as soon as possible. They will have 40 days to review this code, and we want to encourage all Bristol MPs to meaningfully engage in the process.

As ever, we are doing all we can to advocate for our trans and non-binary community. We are proud to be a coalition made up of tens of trans groups alongside LGBTQ+ groups that include our whole community.

We will remain unwavering in our commitment to trans people.

At Saturday’s hate march, three white women appeared on stage dressed in niqabs. The crowd started booing. Encouraging chants of “take it off”, they then removed the niqabs, revealing their clothing underneath.

We are disgusted by this Islamophobic and racist act that mocks and dehumanises Muslim women. It also plays into the racist trope that Muslim women don’t choose to wear cover which is deeply offensive.

We send our solidarity to all Muslim women across our communities and will do all we can as a charity to counteract this hateful narrative.

We are heartbroken to hear of the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which is being investigated as a hate crime. Our thoughts are with those who were killed, their friends, family, and loved ones, along with those who survived and have to live with the trauma of this event. Our thoughts are also with the wider Muslim community, who have been subjected to constant Islamophobia. High-profile hate like this ripples through communities, leaving people living in a state of fear.

Islamophobia like this doesn't happen in a vacuum. It is being stoked by politicians, public figures, and the media. It is being stoked by the kind of hate we saw on Saturday, where people felt able to express extreme Islamophobia with impunity.

People should be able to practice their religion freely without fear of hate. They should be able to attend places of worship without being targeted. We need to stand together and speak out against Islamophobia - not just the extreme manifestation of Islamophobia that we see when acts of violence like this happen, but also the everyday Islamophobia.

Hate should have no place in our communities. For anyone targeted by hate in Avon and Somerset, please reach out.

This weekend, a far-right protest was held in London. The turnout was lower than last year but still alarmingly high. The decrease in numbers doesn’t detract from the fear that seeing thousands attending a march fuelled by Islamophobia, racism, and hatred will cause for people, in particular Muslim communities, people seeking sanctuary, and people from racially minoritised communities.

The Islamophobic, racist hate spewed during speeches and displayed on placards was deeply disturbing. The fact that this hate speech is not being more widely condemned is also disturbing. Hate should have no place here.

This country is richer for and has benefited hugely from the diversity of culture and faith that makes up the United Kingdom. At SARI, we are exhausted by the vitriolic, divisive rhetoric that ignores this. It is a rhetoric that sadly means more people coming through our doors reporting hate and being harmed.

The Runnymede Trust said it perfectly. “The far right doesn’t represent a united kingdom. We do.” Those who stand in solidarity against hate and who celebrate multi-cultural communities are what unites this country.

We have to come together to stand against hate and to stand for inclusion, diversity and compassion.

We know many will be feeling even more unsafe following the events of this weekend. For anyone targeted by hate in Avon and Somerset, we are here.

Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

This year's theme is 'At the heart of democracy', which serves as a powerful reminder that the soil of truly democratic societies must be rich in meaningful equity and justice for all, fostering the flourishing of the entire community.

There should be no place for dehumanisation and division in this world. It's crucial to recognise the power of solidarity, community, and allyship across different identities, movements, and borders.
