Scientists have identified more than 50 hormones in the human body.

These hormones manage hundreds of bodily processes, including growth and development, sexual function, reproduction, sleep-wake cycle and mental wellbeing.

Hormones affect mood and emotions by interacting with neurotransmitters in key areas of the brain.

Hormones also influence biological processes such as cell death and neurogenesis, the formation of new neurons.

The prevalence of mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is higher during major hormonal transitions.

Women experience hormonal fluctuations during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause.

Men also experience a decrease in testosterone levels when they get older.

S*x hormones could influence mood through increasing levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine in the brain.

Low levels of serotonin have long been touted as a cause of depression.

People with depression are known to suffer from a loss of neurons in the hippocampus.

Hippocampal neuron loss can disrupt the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates the body’s stress response.
