Glad Colston's Gone

Glad Colston's Gone Glad Colston's Gone is a coalition united by our belief that the toppling of the Colston Statue has benefitted the City of Bristol.

We want to continue conversations it has galvanised around race, racism and justice, historical and present, in Bristol.

"Bristol Against Hate: Not only has Tommy Robinson got himself nicked in Mexico, the racist party 'For Britain' have cancelled their demo on the 9th due to the massive anti-fascist response in Bristol!

Bristol Against Hate will still be holding our demo - 9th April, 11am @ the empty plinth. We ask you to join us on a march, and for food, music and speeches at the plinth to show our solidarity with all Black lives and to celebrate Bristol's diverse activist community.

Anti-Racist, Anti-Fascist"

"Bristol Against Hate, Saturday 9th April @ 11am, Meet at the vacant Colston Plinth - Colston's racist legacy belongs at the bottom of the river. The racist party 'For Britain' and Tommy Robinson are coming to Bristol to celebrate the slave trader Colston in an anti- Black Lives Matter protest. We must oppose this disgusting event."
(poster image text)

Bristol Against Hate is a call out from a range of groups working together to show that there's far more people who are proud of the strength of the anti racism movement in Bristol, including Black Lives Matter, including the decades of campaigning against the Cult of Colston, and including the toppling than there are fans of Ann Marie, Tommy Robinson and 'For Britain's racist posturing.

7th June 2020 was one of the largest street turnouts in Bristol in years - and a week after a couple of hundred people turned up to stand around 'to protect' the cenotaph. We know that confronting racism in all its forms benefits everyone. Let's show that the fragile, defensive minority that 'For Britain' represents is NOT a 'common sense majority'!

A special funding round run by Bristol Redistro for Bristol-based groups led by Black and Brown Racialised Groups to redistribute the £13,518 remaining in the GladColstonsGone Bristol Topplers’ Defence Fund!

All shortlisting and funding decisions will be made by a panel of BPOC who have received funding in previous Redistro funding rounds or are involved in campaigning against Colston.

Please share this with groups you think might benefit! It's just over 3 weeks until the deadline - and the straightforward application form can be found here https://www.bristolredistro.org/apply.html

The support for the Colston 4 was incredible, and showed again and again that the toppling was an act that represented the best of Bristol - and we all breathed out when the 'not guilty' verdict came through.

We're delighted to announce that Glad Colston's Gone is partnering with Bristol Redistro to do a special distribution round using the outstanding funds raised in the ' ! Bristol Topplers’ Defence Fund!' Gofundme.

This crowdfunder covered worst-case legal scenarios, with the plan in place that "In the event that there are funds remaining, they will be donated to
local black-led anti-racist & community groups". Eligibility will include all Black and Brown Racialised Groups, and we encourage applications from groups from across Bristol who may not easily access mainstream funding streams. Full details will be published on Bristolredistro.org when applications open (watch this space!)

Please share to groups you think might benefit!

Bristol Redistro's mission is to give grassroots groups the power to decide how the funds they distribute are used to create social change - their practice is in opposition to the controlling philanthropy of elites such as Colston and the Society of Merchant Venturers.

Thanks to all who contributed so generously - we're happy to be handing these funds over to be distributed by an organisation that is set up for this! This is the only fund which Glad Colston's Gone has been responsible for - money crowdfunded by All Black Lives Bristol in 2020 was paid directly to cover legal costs, and the Banksy fundraiser was arranged directly with the defendants.
