Autism Independence

Autism Independence Autism Independence provides consultancy, training and guidance for those in a range of professions to bridge the gap between families and providers.

Autism is a complex neurological disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioural challenges. One in 100 children are being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the UK. Research shows that autism affects everyone differently. It is not just the many people with autism that are impacted in different ways; it

is also the people in their families and throughout their communities. Looking after a child or an adult with autism can be very challenging in terms of behaviour, communication and socialising. They have special educational needs and may require very complex health care. Their diagnosis can sometimes overshadow their other health needs which often causes a lot of anxiety and challenging behaviours, as it is difficult for them to express their feelings. Our vision at Autism Independence is to educate and empower people with autism and their families, especially those with no or little knowledge and from a social economic background which may have limited access to services. Autism Independence raises awareness and works closely with migrant communities who happen to have a higher incidence of autism, and are living in Western countries. In the Somali community, there is no word that describes autism, yet there is some research that shows a higher than usual incidence of autism. Autism Independence also promotes overcoming taboo and stigma in disabilities as a whole, in an approach that encourages acceptance of disability. We value the importance of creating an environment where parents network, socialise and support each other along by bringing together different communities. Autism independence was founded because of the need to ensure every child and their families have access the best quality of life even if they have autism.
