Thanks to everyone who logged hedgehog sightings on the BigHedgehogMap.org. Since the BS3HP project began in 2020 we have seen a steady decline in the number of sightings logged on the map from 55 in 2020 to just 12 in 2025 (so far). Whether this is representative of a real hedgehog decline in BS3 or simply a lack in sightings being logged we cannot be certain of but possibly a combination of both.

So please continue to log sightings if you do see a hedgehog - this information/citizen science is incredibly valuable for understanding where to focus attention as a community - there may be colonies in other green spaces or linked gardens that we don’t yet know about. There are some areas that seem to have no hedgehogs at all or at least no reported sightings….? Can you fill in the gaps? Remember you can back date sightings so it's not too late to contribute!

This Bonfire Night please

Be careful with bonfires: A pile of logs is a very tempting sight to hedgehogs and their hoglets looking to nest. Here are some tips:

Build your bonfire last minute, on the day you intend to burn.

Check bonfires thoroughly or move it a few meters before lighting.

Put a fence/barrier around the bonfire base to prevent hogs getting in.

Consider mulching or decomposing alternatives.
