The Bristol Young Heroes Awards is about shining a light on the incredible young people across our city. But it’s so much more than that. 💜

It’s about bringing young people together, creating connections and helping them discover that their city is full of people with different backgrounds, experiences and stories to share.

Our 2026 impact report shows just how powerful those connections can be, with 100% of young people who responded saying they had met people from different backgrounds and cultures from all around Bristol.

That matters.

Because when young people meet people they might not otherwise have crossed paths with, they gain new perspectives, build friendships and develop a greater sense of connection and belonging.

The Awards celebrate individual young people, but they also create a space where a whole community can come together.

It’s not just about shining a light on young heroes. It’s about helping them see, experience and become part of a bigger world.

Congratulations to this week’s Better Bristol Lottery winners! 🎉

Every week, members have the chance to win cash prizes, with an annual £10,000 jackpot.

But the Better Bristol Lottery is about more than winning. Every ticket helps generate a steady stream of funding for Community of Purpose, supporting the work we do to create opportunities, build confidence and transform the lives and futures of young people across Bristol.

That support helps us give young people access to experiences, relationships and opportunities that can broaden their horizons, raise their aspirations and help them see what could be possible for their future.

It’s a simple way for people across Bristol to play their part. Small contributions, when combined, can help create a much bigger impact.

Could you be our next winner while helping create more opportunities for young people?

Sometimes an opportunity only becomes life-changing because someone decides to say yes.

For Jason, that started with his Bristol Young Heroes Awards nomination in 2021. Since then, he’s taken part in Purposeful Futures, met people he might never otherwise have met, tried new things and grown in confidence.

As Jason told us at our 10 year celebration, Community of Purpose has given him “opportunities to say yes” again and again.

Those opportunities have helped shape who he is today, but they’ve also shown him what might be possible when he is willing to step outside what feels comfortable.

And now he gets to help create those same opportunities for other young people.

That’s why relationships, pathways and opportunity matter. Sometimes you don’t know where one small “yes” might lead.

“I can’t do it.” Three little words that can stop us before we’ve even started. So on Saturday, at Purposeful Futures, we added one more: “I can’t do it… yet.”

We spent time exploring mindset and motivation, and the idea that confidence, skills and ability aren’t fixed. They can grow through effort, practice, learning and sometimes simply giving something another go.

We talked about what happens when things feel too difficult. When something doesn’t go to plan. When we get things wrong or simply don’t feel motivated.
Because resilience isn’t about never struggling. It’s about learning what to do when we do.

Through practical activities and conversations, our young people explored how small changes in the way we think can help us approach challenges differently, keep going when things get difficult and recognise that a setback doesn’t define us.

And perhaps that’s a lesson that applies to all of us.

“I can’t do it” can become “I can’t do it… yet.”

Purposeful Futures is about giving young people the tools, relationships and support to understand themselves, build self-belief and keep moving towards what’s possible for their future.

One step, one challenge and one “yet” at a time. 💜

The numbers tell us how much has happened over ten years.

But young people have taught us why it matters.

A first trip abroad. A new friendship. A first step into a workplace. Trying something they never thought they could. Finding their voice. Meeting someone who says, “You can.”

These moments might not always appear in a spreadsheet, but they can change how a young person sees themselves and what they believe is possible for their future.

That’s what sits behind the 13,000+ opportunities and experiences created through Community of Purpose.

And we’ve learnt just as much from the young people we work with as we hope they have learnt from us. They’ve challenged us, inspired us and shown us that the best work happens when we listen, create opportunities and let young people help shape what comes next.

Ten years in, the numbers matter.

But the people behind them matter more.🩷

This is what Bristol has helped make possible.

If you look behind the numbers, you find people.

Over the last ten years, businesses have opened doors. Volunteers have given their time. Schools have made introductions. People have shared ideas, offered encouragement, provided funding and stepped forward when they were needed.

And when things weren’t easy, that support mattered even more.

Community of Purpose was never built by Community of Purpose alone. It has grown through relationships between young people, businesses, schools, volunteers, families and communities across Bristol.

At first, we thought we were building programmes.

We’ve realised we were building something much bigger: an ecosystem of people who believe in what can happen when we come together around young people.
Every number required somebody.

And Bristol, you played your part. 🩷

Ten years of Community of Purpose. 🩷

Over that time, more than 13,000 opportunities, experiences and moments of support have been created for young people across Bristol.

That includes 11,000+ Break Free places, 689 businesses engaged, and 85+ businesses actively investing today.

Those numbers give us a sense of the scale, but they don’t tell us what those moments mean.

Because behind every number is a young person. And behind every opportunity is someone who helped make it possible.

These aren’t just our numbers. They’re Bristol’s.

For Maddi, being a Bristol Young Heroes Awards finalist in 2021 was just the beginning. 💜

After being recognised for her work with the Covid vaccination programme and youth voice through St John Ambulance, Maddi became part of the wider Community of Purpose network.

Through Purposeful Futures, she was introduced to opportunities that helped her step outside her comfort zone, including a public speaking session that sparked a journey she never expected.

From being someone who was too shy to raise her hand in class, Maddi went on to become a mentor for a national public speaking competition, lead mentor and take part in forums helping organisations bring youth voice into policy making.

As Maddi said at our 10 year celebration:
“The Bristol Young Heroes Awards marks the start of the journey, not the end.”

That is exactly why we believe in creating the relationships, pathways and opportunities that continue long after the Awards night.

Maddi is now giving back as a Break Free volunteer, supporting the next generation of young people and seeing first-hand the confidence and aspirations they develop.

One opportunity can lead to another. One relationship can open a door. And one young person can go on to open doors for others. 💜

Bristol2Bordeaux is about giving young people the opportunity to experience a world beyond what they already know.

For some of the young people who travelled with us, this was their first time leaving Bristol. For some, it was their first time on an aeroplane. So while the trip may have only lasted a few days, the impact of that experience can last much longer.

From meeting young people in Bordeaux and experiencing a different culture, to navigating new places, trying new things and building friendships, every part of the journey gave them an opportunity to grow in confidence and independence.

These experiences can help young people see beyond the boundaries of what they know and begin to imagine what else might be possible for them. That is why Bristol2Bordeaux matters. It isn’t simply about taking young people to another city, it’s about making their world bigger.

And it’s only possible because of the relationships between young people, schools, businesses, partners and communities who come together to create these opportunities.

We’re so proud of every young person who took that step and embraced the adventure. ❤️

Thank you to our investors: Avent Interiors, Exacta Group, Lancer Scott and Olympian.
