The Mature Norway Maples of St Pauls, Bristol
Here in Bristol we have a situation with a landowner who has twice attempted the destruction of five mature, urban trees with an estimated amenity value of £200K. These Norway Maples and their valuable canopy are protected under a Tree Protection Order (TPO) yet we, the public, did not receive advance notice of their removal.
Without warning, very early one sunny Sunday morning back in June, 2019, after a lifetime of providing much needed shade, oxygen and sanctuary for wildlife, a chainsaw arrived and the largest of the five trees was reduced to a stump. A citizen’s intervention prevented the landowner from wiping them all out on his first attempt, and our campaign to save the Norway Maples was born.
The situation at present is desperate. The landowner is acting with impunity, fencing off access to the trees, naturally without a permit. Three mature Norway Maples remain at the former probation office site at 31-45 Lower Ashley Rd, BS2 9PZ. We are fighting for them to stay.
We are not anti-sustainable development. We are pro-trees and their proven benefits to the community, the environment, the economy and our wellbeing.
