🙌 International Women’s Day with Prodigal Arts 💜
Prodigal Arts was honoured to run two creative workshops this March to celebrate International Women’s Day — one with the amazing women at The Nelson Trust Women’s Centre and another at the Bristol City Council building as part of the Bristol Women’s Voices event.
During the sessions, participants were invited to design a postcard for a woman who inspires them. The workshops sparked powerful conversations and some incredibly moving and beautiful stories. It was inspiring to see creativity used as a way to celebrate strength, resilience and the women who shape our communities and history.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and shared their stories. 💫
These workshops also helped raise awareness of the important work being done by Prodigal Arts and The Nelson Trust, supporting women and creating spaces where voices, creativity and community can thrive.

Before joining Prodigal Arts, one participant at HMP Leyhill described life in prison as “drifting” — passing time, waiting for parole, and struggling to find purpose.

When he discovered our workshops, everything changed.

Through printmaking and illustration, he began exploring new techniques and new ways of seeing the world. “It feels like I’m thawing out creatively – it’s a freedom.”

Today he feels more confident, more hopeful, and motivated to build a different future.

“Prodigal Arts has made me feel human again – that I’m a worthwhile human.”

Your support during the Big Give campaign helps more people in prison rediscover creativity, connection, and a positive path forward.

‘M’ attends our weekly Prodigal Arts sessions at The Nelson Trust in Bristol, where creativity has helped her grow in confidence and find new ways to tell her story.

She says: "I didn't think initially I would be able to get to the stage that I'm at now creatively. I've been given the right tools to express my own stories.”

As part of the wider network of trauma-informed women’s services at The Nelson Trust, our sessions offer a welcoming and supportive creative space — somewhere to make, reflect, and rebuild confidence and self-belief.

‘M’ continues: “I’ve done Lino-printing, collaging, painting. Bringing everything together with help from the teacher"

🙌During our Big Give campaign, your donation will be matched, doubling your impact.

Give today to help more women like ‘M’ access creativity, confidence, and support.

Personal story: JB
Before joining Prodigal Arts, JB says life felt “dull and lifeless.” Years in prison and PTSD had left him angry and isolated.
Art was the one thing that kept him going in his cell. When he heard about our workshops, he took a chance.
“At first I didn’t like people. But the class gelled. We cared about each other and learned from each other.”
Today JB proudly calls himself a portrait artist. His work is selling and being displayed in renowned places.
“A full turnaround from hate to caring. I’ve found a medicine that works.”
Through Prodigal Arts, he says he’s regained something he thought was lost: dignity.
This Big Give, your support can help more people rebuild their lives through creativity, connection and hope. 🎨

'D' attends Prodigal Arts sessions at HMP Bristol, where creativity offers a moment of freedom, confidence, and hope.

He says: “Creativity is a lifesaver. If I can keep making art when I’m released then it will probably keep me out of trouble because it gives me something to do.”

✨ Right now your donation can go twice as far.
During our Big Give campaign, every gift is matched, doubling the impact of your support.
