I’m delighted to share that the first phase of the refurbishment of the Ladies’ Mile loos has now been completed. Consort have carried out essential work to the roof (as much as possible without risking collapse), along with repainting the exterior, installing new fencing, and improving the lighting.

I very much hope that the second phase of work will begin in the New Year.

Wishing everyone a very happy Christmas.

At long last, work has finally begun to refurbish the historic Stoke Road loos — the very building featured so poignantly in Victoria Hughes’ book Ladies Mile.

Fencing now rings the site, scaffolding hugs the old roof, painting has begun, and after decades of waiting, this much-loved little landmark is at last receiving the care it deserves.

But as anyone who knows old buildings will tell you… once the work begins, the real story often reveals itself. Hidden damage may come to light — and with it, unexpected extra costs.

So although the project is under way (and how wonderful that is!), we still need support — perhaps more than ever. Every bit of help brings us closer to restoring the place where Victoria welcomed generations of Bristolians with dignity, humour and compassion.

If you’d like to be part of this next chapter, please spread the word, buy a book, book an illustrated talk, or make a donation.

Here’s to bringing the Stoke Road building back to life — for Victoria, for the Downs, and for the community she loved. 💛

Packed House for The Story of Ladies’ Mile in Nailsea!

A big thank you to the Nailsea & District Local History Society for their wonderful welcome last night. Around fifty members and guests turned out for The Story of Ladies’ Mile — and what an evening it was!

Their kind feedback afterwards described the talk as “rich, detailed and fascinating” — revealing a little-known part of Bristol’s past that few had ever heard of. There were plenty of lively questions and a cheerful huddle afterwards as people chatted, shared memories, and bought books.

It was a joy to see so much enthusiasm for this hidden local story — and such a warm, engaged audience. Thank you again to everyone in Nailsea who made the evening so special!

Call now to connect with business.

💫 Wonderful news for the Ladies’ Mile loos!

I’ve just had confirmation from Bristol’s Parks Department that, thanks to the £7,500 raised for their refurbishment, work is due begin on 3rd November!

The planned works include:
• Repainting the green wooden fascia
• Repairing the fencing
• Cleaning out the guttering and replacing roof tiles
• Restoring the outside lighting

These repairs will transform the outer appearance of this much-loved little landmark — a huge step towards honouring its history and preserving it for the future.

This progress has only been possible because of your generosity — through book sales, donations, and the wonderful support shown at talks and events.

Together, we’re showing what can happen when a community comes together to care for something truly special. Thank you! 💚

I can’t say too much just yet, but let’s just say your enthusiasm, generosity, and belief in this little green treasure are about to make a very visible difference!

Keep an eye out — all will be revealed in a few days!
