🌿 Weaving nature through towns and cities 🌿

Last week, Avon Wildlife Trust was delighted to co-host a Nature Towns and Cities visit in Bristol, bringing together people from local authorities, voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, community groups and more from across the UK!

The day started exploring how Bristol is bringing nature back into our neighbourhoods and creating greener, healthier places for people and wildlife 💚

We shared learning from Bristol’s Nature Together project, drawing on Avon Wildlife Trust’s long history of championing urban wildlife and our growing focus on neighbourhood-scale plans to bring nature back to our doorsteps. We also dived into how our Community Ecologists can provide expertise, inspiration and a friendly ear to our community partners as they take action for nature.

It was wonderful to get out into the community, visiting Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust and Ardagh in Horfield, to see how local spaces and community-led projects can help people connect with nature and each other.

The visit brought people together to celebrate community-led nature recovery, share ideas and explore how we can learn from one another to make nature a bigger part of everyday life 🌱

We are cancelling our usual Really Wild Wednesday tomorrow - sorry for any disappointment.

We will be back after half term on Nov 4th at our winter time of 1.30pm.

This week! Really Wild Social- with Mrs Meg Avon on Tuesday, 6:30 - 8:30 at Old St James, Romney Ave, bring and share meal 🥖
And Really Wild Wednesday at Lockleaze Sports Centre on Wednesday from 1:30 - 5 (drop in) for some outdoor work. 🪏

Another great afternoon, with 10 residents coming out and helping us scythe the meadows on Thornycroft Close and Landseer Avenue!

Cutting the meadows back and removing the grass helps the flowers continue to thrive, and the scythes are much more wildlife friendly than mowers - small things can escape the blades!

We also mulched around fruit bushes, and trees to feed them and help them retain water.

Well done all involved, it was lovely to see you all!

3 volunteers scythed the meadow on Spalding Close yesterday, putting it to bed for the winter. We also enjoyed chatting to people passing who were interested in the scything!

Next week, on Wednesday afternoon we will be cutting back the meadow on Thornycroft Close, and Landseer Avenue. Get in touch if you want to come along and give scything a go! Or please just pop out to say hi, we love that too!

This is a great blog by Natalie, who is helping develop the Nature Permit scheme at Bristol City Council- a permission system to make it easier for communities to take action for nature.

Having experienced the amazing benefits of communities creating nature habitat on council land, we love this idea, and are delighted to be helping to trial and refine it.
