I think as women, and especially as mums, we carry this unspoken guilt whenever we choose ourselves.

HEARD. For women diagnosed with ADHD later In Life.
We tell ourselves we should be doing the washing, answering messages, making dinner, sorting the house, looking after everyone else…

And for so many of us with ADHD, there’s another layer to it.

We’ve spent decades masking.

People-pleasing.
Over-explaining.
Saying yes when we desperately wanted to say no.
Putting everyone else’s needs before our own because somewhere along the way we learned that our worth came from being useful.

After 41 years of living that way, those patterns don’t disappear overnight. They become second nature. Undoing them takes time, patience and a whole lot of self-compassion.

So today I chose to do something different.

I took a couple of intentional hours just for me.

No shopping.
No errands.
No productivity.
No expectations.

I simply came and sat amongst the trees, listened to the birds, watched the world carry on around me and let myself just… be.

Since March, life has felt like hospital and home, home and hospital. Somewhere along the way I’d forgotten what it feels like to simply exist without rushing to the next thing.

Everything else could wait for a couple of hours.

The washing will still be there.
The emails can wait.
The jobs around the house aren’t going anywhere.

But I needed to check in with me.

For years, I never really sat with my emotions. I distracted myself from them. I drank to quiet my mind. I kept myself busy because silence felt uncomfortable.

Now I’m learning something completely different.

That it’s okay to sit with your feelings.
It’s okay to feel overwhelmed.
It’s okay to not have all the answers today.

The emotion won’t last forever.

Sometimes healing isn’t about fixing anything at all. Sometimes it’s simply giving yourself permission to stop running long enough to hear what your heart has been trying to tell you.

Rest isn’t lazy.
Rest is productive.
Rest is necessary.

You don’t have to burn yourself out before you’re allowed to pause.

So if you’ve needed permission today to take a couple of hours for yourself, this is it.

Go and sit in the sunshine.
Take yourself for a coffee.
Read a book.
Listen to the birds.
Cry if you need to.
Smile if you can.

Just spend a little time with the person who has carried you through every single hard day…

You.

And if that little voice in your head starts telling you that you’re being selfish, remind it of this:

You cannot pour into everyone else if you never refill yourself. 🤍

💗 What Operating System Are You Running?

For years, many of us have been told we’re:

* too much,
* too sensitive,
* too forgetful,
* too emotional,
* too disorganised.

We begin to believe that we’re somehow broken.

But what if we’re not?

Think about computers for a moment.

Windows.
Mac.
Linux.

None of them is wrong.

They simply process information differently.

The same task might require a different route depending on the operating system.

So what if our brains are a little like that?

What if ADHD and autistic brains aren’t “faulty versions” of a neurotypical brain, but simply different operating systems?

That doesn’t mean life is easy.

Many of us still experience real disability, overwhelm, burnout, sensory overload, emotional dysregulation and executive dysfunction. Those challenges are real and deserve support.

But perhaps one of the biggest shifts comes when we stop asking:

“What’s wrong with me?”

…and start asking:

“How does my brain work best?”

That one question can replace years of shame with curiosity.

💗 At HEARD, we believe understanding ourselves isn’t about pretending life isn’t hard. It’s about recognising that different doesn’t mean less.

I’d love to know…

✨ If your brain had an operating system name, what would it be called?

Mine might be:

HEARD OS

* 127 tabs open
* Updates at random
* Runs brilliantly when inspired
* Needs snacks to function
* Occasionally forgets why it walked into the room 😅

👇 Tell us about your operating system.

☀️ HEARD. Summer Reminder: Be Extra Kind to Yourself in the Heat

If you’ve been feeling more overwhelmed, exhausted, emotional or unable to focus over the last few days, you’re not imagining it.

Many neurodivergent women are especially sensitive to heat. Changes in temperature can increase sensory overload, drain our energy, make emotional regulation harder, disrupt sleep, and leave us feeling completely out of sorts.

A few gentle reminders for today:

💗 Drink little and often. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Adding an electrolyte drink once a day can help if you’ve been sweating a lot.

💗 Eat little and often too. If a full meal feels too much, try fruit, yoghurt, salads, smoothies or protein snacks.

💗 Keep your environment as cool as possible. Close curtains during the hottest part of the day, use a fan, and open windows once it cools down in the evening.

💗 Wear whatever feels comfortable. Loose, breathable clothing is more important than worrying about how you look.

💗 Lower your expectations. Today might not be the day to tackle your to-do list. Survival counts as productive.

💗 If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try cooling your body rather than pushing through. A cool flannel on your neck, wrists or feet, a lukewarm shower, or simply sitting somewhere shady can make a surprising difference.

💗 If you’re taking ADHD medication, remember it may reduce your awareness of hunger or thirst. Set reminders to drink and eat if you need them.

💗 Rest without guilt. Your body is working much harder than usual just to keep itself cool.

Most importantly…

You do not have to earn your rest.

If today all you’ve managed to do is stay cool, drink some water and get through the day, that is enough girl!

How is everyone coping where you are? 🌸

I’m guessing that at some point today, you probably apologised for something you didn’t need to apologise for… I know because I did too. Several times…

Maybe for talking too much.
Maybe for forgetting something what you were talking about, a word? a name?
Maybe for needing a break.
Maybe simply for being yourself. AGAIN.

Here’s your reminder tonight ladies 🤍✨

You do not have to earn your right to take up space…
You don’t have to be the quietest, the most organised, the least emotional, or the one who always has everything together to deserve kindness!

The people who love you won’t need a perfect version of you.
They’ll simply need YOU.

So tonight, let your shoulders drop.
Stop replaying every conversation.
Stop carrying things that don’t belong to you.

We have survived every single difficult day we’ve ever had
We’re still here.
We’re still growing.
And we are more than enough, exactly as we are.

Sleep nice
🤍

✨ Introducing HEARD. Recommends ✨

One of the questions I’m asked all the time is…

“Where can I find good events, workshops and conferences?”

So I’ve decided to create something new within HEARD. Studio.

From now on, I’ll be sharing a carefully selected collection of events that I genuinely believe could be valuable for our community.

The first organisation we’re partnering with is Masters Events Ltd whose conferences bring together many of the world’s leading experts in trauma, mental health and wellbeing.

I’ll only ever share events that I think fit with the values of HEARD., whether that’s ADHD, trauma, nervous system regulation, self-compassion, women’s wellbeing or personal growth.

If you choose to book through one of our links, HEARD. Studio may receive a small affiliate commission at no extra cost to you.

Every penny earned helps us continue growing HEARD. and moves us one step closer to our goal of funding free support groups and community events.

So keep an eye out for our new…

🩷 HEARD. Recommends

I can’t wait to start sharing some incredible learning opportunities with you all.

As always, thank you for supporting HEARD. Every little bit helps us build something bigger together. 🌸
