Sunday Assembly Brighton

Sunday Assembly Brighton Friendly, secular, volunteer-run community by the sea. Second or Fourth Sunday of every month, Middle Street School, Brighton.

Every 2nd Sunday of the month, we celebrate life with a free assembly where we sing songs, eat cake, raise money for local causes, & learn about our world.

- Live Better - Help Often - Wonder More - Come to explore our monthly theme through the medium of song, stories, readings and cake. We're always looking for local contributors for the 'sermons' and readings, so do get in touch if you fancy it! We are here for everyone who wants to live better, help often and wonder more.

Wellies on? Glitter at the ready? Festival season has sprung! Here to relieve you of your Sunday Assembly withdrawal symptoms is the fabulous Danni Emery of Insecurity Guards , a global collective of performers who help people let loose without worry; patrolling festival crowds and help people get past their, well, insecurities! We also have the most excellent performer Gracie sharing some most excellent storytelling poetry with us.

This month we're raising money* for Impact Initiatives who work throughout Sussex providing activities, support and information for both children, and older adults, promoting safety, skill building & wellbeing.

Beyond that, our regular round of singing, food bank**, tea (bring your keep-cup!), cake***, and friendly chit-chat with old friends and new****, to keep our spirits up and community warm :) Click the link in bio or see our Facebook/website for more details!

Aaaannnd… honest moment - we love putting on Sunday Assembly, but we really could use a few extra heads, hearts, and hands (preferably still attached to willing volunteers) to help us keep this community going

* money raised is usually split 50:50 between the charity and Sunday Assembly (for running costs, hall hire, tea, etc)

** tins of food, dry packet food, toiletries, and so on to be distributed to Brighton food banks by us at Sunday Assembly :)

*** and if you're a keen baker - bring cake/brownies/your great bake-off practice pieces!

**** hey, tell your friends and bring them along too: more people = more community = more singing and good times :)

***** The funnest of the asterisks is the extraneous one: you may have noticed England's largest multi-arts festival is happening on our doorstep! Brighton Festival is celebrating its 69th (nice) birthday!

Hey Brighton Congregation! Spring is finally rolling around, and there are some changes afoot. We love running Sunday Assembly Brighton, and are grateful for everyone who contributes, whether by volunteering, baking, or simply showing up.

It’s been a tough few months with our volunteer & organising committee depleting. As we mentioned last assembly, we’ve put our heads together about how best to sustain this community while not burning out our regular volunteers and committee. For the time being, we will be running assemblies every other month. The next assembly will be on Sunday 10th May, 11am at Middle Street School. More details to follow soon.

We’re excited to see you again in May, and please, if you enjoy Sunday Assembly, we really could use a few extra heads, hearts, and hands (preferably still attached to willing volunteers) to help us keep this community going.

See you in May… or on Thursday 16th April, 6pm at the Battle of Trafalgar for a planning meeting *cough* *cough* ;)

Reflections from our assembly held this March! Finally, we welcomed our wonderful Sunday Assembly community member, humanist, and thoughtful blogger (check his website! humanistdad.uk), Alistair Lichten, to talk about designing traditions with his family. He told us how we can accept traditions as being ok for a certain time, but we should be free to leave them behind when they no longer fulfil us. He talked of how he arranged his bookshelf with literature and decoration to mark the various awareness months, which helped him learn of the world around us but also highlight some blind spots in his own understanding. Ultimately, he said, we need to decide what traditions are meaningful for us, and that decision leads to ongoing reflection, with intention

Reflections from our assembly held this March! We welcomed back long time friend of Sunday Assembly and poet extraordinaire, Rosa Julian, to this time share some of her own thoughts on celebrating or marking occasions. Having written poetry to mark out occasions, as well as recently training as a celebrant, Rosa told us of her need to mark the beginnings, middles, and endings of things. Welcoming in the new and letting go of the old to give meaning and guidance to the journey of life, be it with gratitude or sorrow. She invited the Sunday Assembly congregation to participate in a small secular ritual, where we pondered on old things and new things and gave thanks for the things we have and said goodbye to the things that we leave behind

Reflections from our assembly held this March! First up we had the ever excellent & exciting organiser from our own Sunday Assembly, Amy Darby , talk about exploring the meanings of rituals. Teasing out rituals, both personal and societal, from how we spend our time generally and regular routine, Amy told us how she felt that commonplace celebrations and rituals felt somewhat misplaced. Delving deeper into identifying ritual from routine, she told us how intention plays a key part and the feeling of connection to yourself and/or the wider community around us; giving us psychological organisation to our human experience.

Thank you for coming to our assembly! We had a really REALLY great assembly with the most dynamic & diligent Amy , powerful & poetic Rosa, and enigmatic and engaging Alistair. We raised a most excellent and SUPER generous £190.18, which will be split between .project & our running costs*

Thanks also for your donations to our food bank!! The lovely people at Village Food Bank in Kemptown send their thanks! As always, blessed be the cake makers, for theirs is our delicious thanks :) And of course our wonderful, wonderful volunteers, without whom Sunday Assembly Brighton wouldn't be as wonderful as it is

*At the moment, we at Brighton Assembly HQ are trying to keep our boat afloat as well as looking for a new venue, so we're splitting the donations after we've covered costs like hall hire, tea/coffee, song licences, etc. We hope to get our Sunday Assembly back to the point where we split donations down the middle, and sometimes have fun events where we donate the whole lot

[In a little bit of an effort to be more transparent about our fundraising at Sunday Assembly, we want to highlight how much we, as a community, raise at each assembly. We are committed to giving part of our collection to charity, and to being run on donations only. Our doors remain open to all who want to be part of a friendly gathering who strive to , &

Bring your reusable mug to Sunday Assembly please! As recyclable as paper cups are, we'd really like to have a more sustainable assembly going forward! So if you're thinking of coming to the next Sunday Assembly, please please remember to bring your reusable mug so we can be that little bit better for the planet whilst we have our post-assembly tea and cake :)

Spring is almost here! And we’ve been thinking about secular rituals for our next assembly: Rite Here, Rite Now! Our main speaker is from Sunday Assembly Brighton’s own ranks! Occupational therapist, hostess with the most(ess) & seeker of intentional community, Amy Darby will be considering the role of rituals within our lives. From the mundane to the extravagant, Amy will be exploring the many functions & forms of ritual, and most importantly, their value in establishing connections & community.

This month we're raising money* for Hummingbird Project .project who work locally, responding to the needs of young refugees, and campaign nationally, for the rights & protection of refugees.

A look back at ImitationGame assembly we had this February! We had a bumper special assembly with the powerhouse behind and good friend of Sunday Assembly Brighton, Richard Robinson! Richard was going to begin with telling us a tale from his degree in psychology, about ducklings imprinting on Konrad Lorenz.. but figured to get the whole story, he'd begin with the Big Bang. Fast forwarding through the formation of atoms and stars and earth and DNA and animals, using tricks to communicate with their young: sight, pheromones, and mirror neurons. He told us of how may have become domesticated: through wolf pups that only open their eyes after 3 weeks of being born, imprinting on humans. We, humans, also have some imprinting which occurs well after birth: through social rules and customs that sometimes leave us with inconsistent social biases that we have to actively challenge to overcome

Hello hello hello! This month's Sunday Assembly we will be thinking about The Imitation Game! We are bringing to the fore yet another one of our lovely science geniuses & longtime friend of Sunday Assembly to our main talk slot, Richard Robinson, . Richard has been thinking about how we follow each other, about how animals imprint on their parents, be they biological or adoptive, and how we can end up blindly following along and imitating the things we ourselves see and learn!
This month we're raising money* for Lost Cats Brighton , who provide a network for reuniting lost cats with their owners around Brighton & Hove
