When a child is poorly in hospital, life can suddenly become overwhelming. The worry, the uncertainty, and long days and nights away from home can all take a toll on the mental health of families.

Today we're acknowledging World Mental Health Day and reminding everyone going through difficult times that it’s okay not to be okay, and to you can always reach out for support if you're struggling.

At Ronald McDonald House Brighton, we know that keeping families close isn’t just about providing a place to stay. It’s about giving families somewhere to feel safe, supported, and surrounded by people who understand. Sometimes it’s a cup of tea, a listening ear, a friendly smile, or simply having somewhere to take a moment and breathe. The littlest things can sometimes make the biggest difference.

Christmas may still feel a little way off, but we're already looking ahead to the festive season and would love your help! 🎄

As we start planning our festive content, we're looking for stories from families who have stayed in a Ronald McDonald House over the last few years. These stories help us show the real impact of keeping families close during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

We're particularly keen to hear from:
• Families who stayed in a House over the Christmas period
• Families whose siblings were able to stay together
• Families who can share how the House helped remove a practical worry during a difficult time
• Families from all regions and backgrounds

The stories shared may be featured across our website and social media channels, helping us highlight the importance of our Houses and the families we support.
If you have a story to share, or know a family who might be interested, please get in touch or email [email protected]
Thank you for helping us keep families at the heart of everything we do. ❤️

Last week, we said a very special goodbye to the Wickens family after a 2 month and 15 day stay at our Brighton House. ❤️

During their stay, their little boy Tommy was receiving treatment at the Trevor Mann Baby Unit after being born prematurely, weighing just 915 grams. His journey has been incredibly tough, including multiple operations, a hernia, and even spending 28 hours in an induced coma.

Despite everything he has been through, Tommy has shown what a remarkable little fighter he is. After so many challenging days, he is finally home with his family and now weighs a wonderful 6lb 4oz. 🏡

Mum Lorraine shared:

""We really don’t know what we would have done without Ronald McDonald House Brighton. It truly felt like home, and I can’t thank the staff enough. Not only were we able to stay close to Tommy, but his siblings were able to stay with us too.""

Keeping families close during some of the most difficult moments of their lives is exactly why we are here.

We are so delighted that Tommy is home where he belongs, and we wish the Wickens family every happiness for the future!

A huge 'thank you' to Brighton i360 for their incredibly generous donation of tickets for the families staying at Ronald McDonald House Brighton. 💙

For many of the families we support, opportunities to enjoy days out and spend time together as a family can be limited while their child receives treatment. Experiences like Brighton i360 provide a welcome chance to relax, have fun and enjoy a sense of normality during a difficult time.

This thoughtful gift offers families the chance to take a break from hospital appointments and enjoy some quality time together, creating special memories away from the challenges of hospital life.

We had a wonderful time celebrating McHappy Day at our Brighton House on Saturday.

The House was filled with smiles, laughter and plenty of fun as families came together to enjoy the day. It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate the support that helps us keep families close to their children during some of the most challenging times.

Thank you to everyone who supports our House, whether through fundraising, volunteering, donations or simply spreading the word. Your generosity helps us continue providing a welcoming place for families when they need it most.

We are so grateful to be part of such a supportive community.❤️

During the summer holidays, siblings staying at Ronald McDonald House Brighton enjoyed a special day out on the Volk's Electric Railway. 🚂

It was a wonderful opportunity for families to spend some quality time together away from the hospital and enjoy a change of scenery. For Majdi, the day was made even more memorable when he got the chance to ""drive"" the train himself! ✨

We're so grateful to Volks Electric Railway Association for kindly donating the vouchers and helping create these special moments for our families. Experiences like these give siblings a chance to have fun, make memories and simply enjoy being children during a challenging time.

You may walk past Ronald McDonald House Brighton and see a building, but for the families who stay here, it's so much more than that. ❤️

It's somewhere to rest after a long day at the hospital. Somewhere to make a cup of tea, take a breath, and find a little sense of normality when life suddenly feels anything but normal.

When a parent hears the words, ""Your child needs to stay in hospital,"" everything can change in an instant. In those moments, being close matters.

It means being there for the difficult conversations and the moments of relief. It means being able to sit by their child's bedside, hold their hand and simply say, ""I'm here.""

Every day, we welcome families through our doors exhausted, worried and overwhelmed. We also see the difference a comfortable room, a warm meal and a supportive community can make.

Tomorrow is McHappy Day, and a trip to McDonald's can help make all of this possible.

£1 from every qualifying main meal purchased will be donated to Ronald McDonald House UK, helping families stay close to their child during hospital treatment. You can also support by rounding up your order or picking up a £5 Grimace Beanie where 100% of the proceeds are donated to the charity.

You may never meet the families your support helps, but for them, it can make all the difference.

Behind every room at Brighton House is a family.

A family who may have travelled miles to be by their child's side.

A parent looking for somewhere to rest after a long day on the ward.

A family needing comfort, support and a place to stay together during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

A family who simply need to know they are not facing it alone.

That's why McHappy Day matters. 💛

On 26 September, every qualifying main meal purchased at McDonald's will help support Ronald McDonald House UK, helping families stay close to their child during hospital treatment. You can also make an even bigger difference by rounding up your order at the till.

Whether you're making a donation, rounding up your order or simply sharing our message, you're helping families when they need it most.

Together, we're keeping families close.

We are delighted to share that our wonderful Duke of Edinburgh volunteers, Mariella and Jess, have officially completed their Silver Award! 🎉

Over the last eight months, they have generously given their time to volunteering at our Brighton House, helping with everything from Housekeeping and decorating for special events to supporting awareness days and creating beautiful window displays.

Their hard work, enthusiasm and willingness to help have made a real difference to our House and the families we support.

We're also excited to share that Mariella and Jess will be returning next year to complete their Gold Award, and we can't wait to welcome them back!

Thank you both for your dedication and commitment. You should be incredibly proud of everything you've achieved. Congratulations! 💛

As we recognize this September, we're thinking of the NICU families supported by Ronald McDonald House programs around the world ❤️

Families like baby Grayson's.

Grayson was born early at 33 weeks and needed immediate surgery and specialized care. For nearly a month while Grayson was in the NICU, his parents, Paige and Jordan, stayed just steps away at Ronald McDonald House Louisville

"Being at Ronald McDonald House allowed us to be with Grayson in the NICU as much as possible," Paige says. "It was the biggest blessing to us on our journey."

Sometimes self-care is about the big things, and sometimes it's the little things that help you feel a bit more like yourself. 💙

A huge 'thank you' to Wild for their generous donation of refillable deodorants for the families staying with us!

When your focus is entirely on your child in hospital, looking after yourself can easily slip down the priority list. Through initiatives like our Self-Care Sundays, we're able to remind parents to take a moment for themselves, and donations like this help us make that possible.

Thank you, WILD, for helping us provide those small but meaningful comforts to families when they need them most. ✨

“The facility allowed us to stay focused on our son’s needs while still giving him the chance to enjoy being a child.” - The McHugh Vasquez Family

Jeremy, Jessica, and their three children stayed at Ronald McDonald House Atlanta for over 60 nights while their son participated in a feeding therapy program nearby.

When families can stay close, they can focus on what matters most: caring for and supporting one another throughout their child’s medical journey.

When you're navigating your child's medical journey, everyday activities like getting a haircut can fall to the bottom of the priority list.

At Ronald McDonald House Tampa Bay, Inc., Olivia and her team helped families get back-to-school ready with fresh haircuts. We're grateful to community members like Olivia who give back in meaningful ways, helping families feel supported and experience moments of normalcy during challenging times.

Once a Ronald McDonald House Family, always a Ronald McDonald House Family. ❤️

While Harlow and Hadley were in the NICU, the Rardon family found comfort and support at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri. Now, the twins have made it a tradition to give back by volunteering at the House each year, even spending part of their birthday this year packing lunches and preparing a meal for families staying at the House.

Thank you, Harlow and Hadley!

Summer days call for a sweet treat! 🍦

When a child is receiving medical care, moments like sharing an ice cream, enjoying a summer activity, or simply spending time together can mean so much.

At Ronald McDonald House, families can hold onto these moments, all while staying close to the care their child needs.

“It is not just the House that provided us with a sense of home – it was the people,” says Shawna.

When the Roy family’s daughter, Carly, was in the NICU, her family stayed at Ronald McDonald House South Central Ontario, surrounded by a community of support while their daughter was receiving medical treatment.

For families like the Roys, Ronald McDonald House becomes more than a place to stay. It's a place of comfort and connection and a reminder that they’re not alone.
