The North Laine Community Association (NLCA) is a leading community association in Brighton, representing all people who live in North Laine, whether home owners or rented. lt was set up in 1976 after the area was saved after being under threat of demolition due to a flyover plan and has been active in campaigning for the residents of the area ever since. NLCA is not a traders' or business org
anisation, it represents the residents of North Laine, a conservation area in central Brighton. There is a separate North Laine Traders' Association. NLCA is independent and has no political or religious affiliation. It is totally volunteer-run with no membership or subscription fees and is a registered charity. All officers, trustees, reps and members donate their services for free. Every other month it produces a news magazine, The North Laine Runner, which is distributed free to every single household and business in North Laine. It provides a vital and important link in the local consultation process, dealing with the council and police if necessary. It has been involved in discussions about many of the major schemes that affect this important and vibrant central Brighton conservation area. It also monitors local planning, traffic and licensing applications and aims to protect the character and appearance of the area for the benefit of residents.
