The Sri Lankan flag represents the spirit and unity of the nation. The golden lion holding a sword stands for bravery and strength, reflecting the resilience of Sri Lankan people. The maroon background symbolises the Sinhalese majority, while the green and orange stripes represent harmony between Sri Lanka’s Muslim and Tamil communities.

Each element embodies a commitment to peace, diversity, and unity. A beautiful reminder of Sri Lanka’s heritage and hope for the future

In Sri Lanka, elephants are revered as sacred symbols of wisdom, strength, and prosperity. They are cherished as living blessings in temples, and they famously lead the grand, illuminated Kandy Esala Perahera procession carrying Buddha's sacred tooth relic.

While Sri Lanka honours this bond daily, the world joins in every August 12th for World Elephant Day. Launched in 2012, this day highlights the urgent need to protect Asian elephants, which are now endangered with fewer than 50,000 left in the wild.

International Day of Friendship

Friendship transcends language, faith and culture and when nurtured across communities, friendship builds strong societies where people work together.

That's why OneSky provides schooling which not only educates our students academically but also helps to create a space where they can meet new people and form bonds which may last forever.

Rural and provincial schools often face challenges with teaching capacity as many teachers lack opportunities for continuous oral-language training compared to educators in well-resourced national schools.

Thanks to your support, we’re funding English teachers, essential supplies and tools that give these students the chance to succeed.

We’ve been busy helping the children on the Hope Estate and the Hope School and recently looked at the challenge of getting safe and clean drinking water, which is vital in the tropical Sri Lankan sun.

At a total cost of less than twelve thousand Sri Lankan Rupees (about £30), we handed out 60 drinking water bottles.

With your help, we can distribute more water bottles to families in need.

A donation of £80 can change a child’s life, providing them with everything they need for a full school year.

You'll be giving children the skills and knowledge they need to break free from the cycle of poverty. With access to education and supplies like books, bikes and uniforms, you'll ensure that no child is held back by a lack of resources, allowing them to focus on learning and reaching their full potential.

Every milestone deserves to be celebrated. 🎓💙

Children achieve the greatest things when they're allowed to learn and grow. These young students are building the foundations for something bigger - and we’re here to support every step.

Because OneSky’s mission is simple: to help shape resilient, empowered young people who value learning, unity, and the future they deserve.

What milestone meant the most to you growing up?

347 students. 3 houses. 1 vibrant school community.

At Hope Hewaheta, learning goes beyond books – it’s about teamwork, shared goals, and a sense of belonging. With nearly equal numbers of boys and girls, and houses named Mars, Venus, and Jupiter, every student plays a part in something bigger.

It’s this spirit of unity and growth that makes a school more than just a place – it becomes a second home.

What did your school community mean to you?

English is one of Sri Lanka’s three languages (along with Tamil and Sinhala) and it’s vital to success because, as well as being the language of business and the lingua franca of the country, most university courses are taught in English.

For this reason, high in the Hope Tea Estate we’re also funding three part-time English teachers at the Vivekananda Tamil Vidiyala School. They’ll be working hard to improve students’ English and we’ll also be providing them with teaching aids like books and printing, along with essentials like food and clothing for students from families who can't afford them.
